Australia’s spikiest icon needs our help! 🦔🇦🇺
Did you know the Short-beaked Echidna has survived since the age of the dinosaurs? Peppa was very excited to encounter one today, mere metres from her home!!
But today, these incredible, egg-laying mammals are facing modern challenges they can’t easily dig their way out of.
Here is what’s happening to our prickly neighbors and how we can protect them:
🏡 Vanishing Home Turf
Echidnas are great wanderers, often patrolling territories spanning dozens of hectares. However, expanding construction, new housing estates, and roads are slicing their homes into tiny pieces. When territory boundaries are ruined by land clearing, echidnas are forced to cross dangerous roads, making vehicle strikes a major threat.
🌡️ The Heat is On
Echidnas might look tough, but they have a hidden vulnerability: they can’t sweat or pant to cool down. Because they have a low baseline body temperature, extreme heatwaves and climate-driven bushfires are incredibly dangerous for them. When logging or clearing removes fallen logs and deep leaf litter, echidnas lose the critical, cool shelters they need to survive hot summer days.
🛠️ How You Can Be an Echidna Ally
Drive with extra care: Slow down at dawn and dusk, especially in semi-rural areas or near bushland where echidnas frequently cross roads.
Keep logs and leaf litter: If you have a large backyard or acreage, leave fallen timber and native undergrowth intact to provide natural insulation and termite snacks.
Provide safe water: During extreme heatwaves, leave shallow dishes of water in shaded areas of your garden (add a few stones so small critters don’t drown).
Become a citizen scientist: Download the EchidnaCSI app! By snapping photos of echidnas or their droppings, you feed vital habitat and diet data directly to Australian researchers tracking their conservation.
