📞 YOU ONLY NEED ONE NUMBER

Whether you’re calling during office hours or need a vet after hours, there’s just one number you need to remember:

☎️ 07 4741 1223

Our friendly team are available Monday to Friday, 9am–5pm and are always happy to help with anything you need.

🌙 Need us after hours?
For after-hours emergencies, outside office hours call 07 4741 1223 and you’ll be provided with the contact number for the vet on call.

📱 Just a quick reminder:
We kindly ask that all enquiries, appointment bookings and after-hours calls come through our main clinic number, rather than contacting individual vets or staff members directly.

Our team and after-hours roster can change regularly, and messages sent directly to individual staff members may not always make it back to the clinic. This can sometimes lead to missed messages, appointments or delays in getting your animal the help they need.

Calling the clinic ensures your enquiry reaches the right person and can be followed up appropriately.

One number is all you need – 07 4741 1223 💗🐾

🌟Case Study🌟

Recently, Dr Julia treated an older pony with a discharging lump on her jaw. What looked like a simple tooth root infection turned out to also involve a fractured jaw! This case highlights the importance of a thorough examination under sedation and radiographing before ripping into removing a tooth. Had this been done, the pony would have been euthanased as the fracture would have been un-salvageable.

Image 1: you can see the bone fragments in the bottom jaw.
Image 2: (taken 3 weeks later) shows a significant gap where the bone fragments were previously removed which was to be expected but allow for healing. Jaw has more stability.

This case is a great reminder that veterinary dental care can provide proper sedation, a thorough exam, reliable diagnostics and pain relief giving the best possible outcome for your horse.

🚨🦟 HEARTWORM: A SILENT THREAT TO YOUR DOG 🦟🚨

We have recently diagnosed cases of heartworm in the Richmond district and our local area, with veterinary clinics also reporting increased cases across Central and North-West Queensland.

Just one mosquito bite can put your dog at risk. 🦟🐶

Heartworm is caused by a parasite that lives in the heart and nearby blood vessels, damaging the heart, lungs and circulation. The frightening part is that infected dogs may show few—or no—signs until the disease is already advanced.

💔 Heartworm disease can be life-threatening, difficult and expensive to treat.

🦟 Heartworm is spread by mosquitoes.

🐾 Any dog exposed to mosquitoes may be at risk.

💊 The good news is that heartworm is highly preventable!

With summer and the wet season approaching, now is the perfect time to check:

❓ Is your dog’s heartworm prevention up to date?

If you are unsure, please contact our team. We can help organise a heartworm test and recommend the most suitable ongoing prevention for your dog.

📞 Call Great Artesian Veterinary Surgery on 07 4741 1223.

Don’t wait until it is too late—protect your dog today. ❤️🐶

We are very grateful to have such supportive clients but even so we all take every loss and mistake to heart. The veterinary su***de rate is 4 times higher than the national average. We know that one of the stages of grief includes anger but we implore all animal owners everywhere to think about the consequences of releasing that emotion before one more veterinary life is lost.

🍂 September is Su***de Prevention Month. Veterinarians are at an increased risk of su***de when compared to other professions in the United States. It is time to raise awareness and take action.

🍂 The CDC published a study in 2018 in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association (JAVMA). The research concluded that “female veterinarians were 2.4 times as likely as the general U.S. population to commit su***de and that the rate for male veterinary technicians was five times higher. Among male veterinarians and female veterinary technicians, the rates were 1.6 and 2.3 times greater, respectively.”

🍂 The study determined that not one factor led to su***de, but a combination of factors including long work hours, work overload, practice management responsibilities, educational debt, poor work-life balance and access.

🍂 In a December 2023 survey conducted by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the number of US veterinarians in clinical practice was 82,704. And of those veterinarians only 4.1% (3,972 veterinarians) are practicing equine medicine. Did you know that the survey revealed that within five years, 50% of these veterinarians leave the field? And did you know that the horse population in the USA is roughly 6.5 million horses?

🍂 Often times, veterinary professionals are juggling their career and personal life. Veterinarians, technicians, assistants, receptionists and managers are important, compassionate, dedicated and critical team members providing knowledgeable and skilled care to your horses. We genuinely love our patients and want to do right by them and their owners; however, the industry is often plagued with negativity from many sources including social media. Let’s start a comment and photo thread of kindness for the RE veterinarians, technicians, assistants, receptionists and managers. Or better yet the next time you see your veterinarian and their technician or assistant or talk to a receptionist - remind them how much you value them and their time.
