I filmed this to show how we’re progressing on our ā€œhugā€ but the outtakes and mistakes were actually way more fun to watch.

At first I thought about captioning it ā€œit’s not that deepā€ but that feels insensitive to the folks who are on here or following me because they are working through challenging behavioural issues and I know first hand how heavy that journey can be.

However, I’m also here to remind you (and myself) that it’s okay to learn something so unserious with your dog and enjoy the messy, silly training too!

I filmed this to show how we’re progressing on our ā€œhugā€ but watching it back, the outtakes and mistakes were actually when we had the most fun.

I don’t want to boil it down to ā€œit’s not that deepā€ because that feels insensitive to the folks who are on here or following me because they’re working through challenging behavioural issues and I know first hand how heavy that journey can be.

However, I’m also here to remind you (and myself) that it’s okay to learn something so unserious with your dog and enjoy the messy, silly training too!

Here to dispel the myth that your dog needs daily visits to the dog park to have their social needs met. For most socially mature dogs,* regular interactions with known dogs trumps greeting every dog at the dog park or on the street.

On this day, Beaux got to have an off lead run around with Percy and Limit that was supervised and strategic. A bit of chase, a lot of sniffing, some recall practice and a satisfied dog ready for a snooze!

*sociability is a spectrum and socially mature dogs with big feelings about other dogs may prefer zero interactions while you work together on this. Reactive dogs, you’re welcome here too!

Why does rewarding your dog in public feel illegal sometimes? šŸ˜‚ Food is a primary reinforcer for dogs. We can use it to teach new behaviours, maintain known behaviours and sometimes as management to prevent undesirable behaviours. While it is achievable to fade food rewards once a behaviour is fluent, what’s the harm in paying your dog? We don’t work for free, why should our dogs?

Spoiler! There’s no such thing as a stubborn dog. Here are a common list of reasons your dog might not be able to do what you’re asking even when you feel like you’ve worked on it in training:
šŸ¤Ž The reinforcement history just isn’t quite there yet and/or the dog hasn’t generalise the cue meaning it hasn’t been reinforced often enough in various environments and around various distractions
šŸ¤Ž They’re too worried about the environment you’ve asked them to perform the behaviour in
šŸ¤Ž There’s something aversive happening when they perform the behaviour, eg a ā€œsitā€ is painful, ā€œcomeā€ always means it’s time to leave the park.
šŸ¤Ž Or, like in this case, you might not have trained the behaviour in the way you think you have. Verbal cues are great but dogs are non verbal communicators so body / hand signals carry a lot of meaning.
