Did an Early Spay or Neuter Just Set Your Dog Up for a Torn ACL?
For decades, "spay or neuter at 6 months" was the default advice — I gave it myself, thousands of times, especially working with shelters. It made sense back then. We were trying to get ahead of pet overpopulation.
But newer research is telling a different story. A study of over 20,000 dogs found that spaying females before age 3, and neutering males before age 2, significantly raises the risk of ACL tears (that's the ligament that stabilizes the knee).
Here's why: those hormones aren't just there for reproduction. They help build strong bones, muscle, and connective tissue as your dog grows. Take them away too early, and a dog's skeleton can outgrow the muscle and soft tissue meant to support it — leaving the joints vulnerable. And once a dog tears an ACL, the risk of arthritis in that joint goes up for life.
If you've got a puppy, please don't treat this like a routine 6-month appointment. Ask your vet about timing — later for larger breeds especially — and ask about hormone-sparing options like a hysterectomy or vasectomy if pregnancy prevention is the real goal.
This isn't about avoiding spay/neuter. Your dog's hormones built the body they're living in. Timing matters. 🐾
