Oh my goodness! The most awful video of me on a young horse has just surfaced. This horse was dropped off at my place on his way to the knackery. His name is Nico. He was 6 years of age. A beautiful type. He was genetically a result of my best stallions all of which were successful in Grand Prix dressage , so Nico was beautifully bred. Nico belonged to a wonderful family friend who had been put in hospital in intensive care by Nico. Prior to this really bad accident Nico had always been a problem child and would just stop. This gradually got worse and worse until the accident. The owner of Nico and my friend is a diminutive lady and 100% not capable of being physically aggressive in any way. Nico before he came to me always had the best of best homes. He wanted for nothing. He was in wonderful condition, he was always rugged, he had his own paddock, he was regularly ridden and he was loved. Here is the question. If a beautiful 6yo horse turns up at your facility and it was bred by your stallion and it belonged to a lifelong friend of yours who had been put in hospital in intensive care by this horse would you just send it to the Knackery?? Well I didn’t and I felt obliged to the horse to just have a look and see if it was possibly salvageable. Well did I get a shock and so the video. I have never ridden anything like it. I am so sad this was caught on video. If I had been thinking of myself I would have immediately just gotten off and sent Nico to the Knackery. That video was a life or death moment for Nico and of that I was very aware. I felt I genuinely had to try my very hardest to see if Nico would consider other options. Anyway by the end of that initial ride I did feel Nico was responding. I rode Nico for another couple of days and he responded very well and started to go without the use of excessive driving aids. I then called up another friend of mine who is also a Grand Prix dressage rider who is always watching out for a special horse but has very limited resources. I disclosed the whole story but said that I thought if Nico could find the right home I thought he was a good horse and maybe a very good horse. So Nico went to a new home. Well it turned out to be brilliant and the posted video is Nico thriving in a loving and competitive home with an exciting future. All of this transpired sincerely with the horses best interests the sole consideration. Unbelievably it was so successful for everyone except me with the release of this video. What can I say. If you think I did that flippantly you are wrong. I hated reaching out in those moments to Nico and asking the hard questions. That was the last place I wanted to be. I have never before ridden a horse that reacted like that and I certainly will never do it again. Was it worth it?? Well not for me however I am very happy for Nico. I need to add that this happened about 2 years ago and the video has been posted by an unhappy ex employee. All I can say is that this awful video was collateral damage of me from the bottom of my heart launching a rescue mission.

I just wanted to share this rather beautiful photo. Going in to the paddocks and getting these rubber tyre feeders out of them is murderous and these rubber feeders actually don’t float. So when the water is this deep you have to walk all around the paddocks until you stumble across them to find them. Then lifting them up and carrying them is also a nightmare they are initially full of water and so heavy even when the water is dumped out. In the comments on my last post you will see a little bit of commentary from the staff regarding Jonny’s fork lift skills which are indeed truly amazing. However, on one occasion when Ella (who is on the left) and Kiara standing in the water and I were on this front loader Jonny, who you can see in the tractor somehow touched the dump leaver and unceremoniously put the lot of us plus the rubber feeders straight back in to the flood waters. Jonny lost quite a few brownie points on that. This photo is two days old and I am very pleased to say that the water is now receding. Phew! Realistically all of the grass under this water will die and turn in to a stinky black mess. Getting our horses back in these paddocks with grass in them realistically will easily be 8 weeks at least. We are now looking at going in to a wet drought so to speak. No pasture. Supplying them with feed, repairing fences and keeping them all healthy is a big job in front of us. I would just like to also shout out to all of the people up in Wingham, Taree and Port Macquarie which is an hour or so north of us who have had floods that make our problems look like nothing. Realistically, we are not able to help but we are thinking of you all.

Holy moley what a day and it isn’t finished with us yet. It has nearly stopped raining here at Ryan’s at Heatherbrae but the Hunter River has gone beyond anything I have ever seen in terms of flooding. The horse’s in the photo being moved are coming out of a paddock that has never been underwater in a flood before. It was high and dry last night at 9pm. These four mares are in foal and part of my pride and joy. If you look closely in the background you can see two spectacular mares with foals at foot. We started at 7:30am today, Friday the 23rd of May and have only just now at 1:30pm managed to re organise all of these horses to higher ground and then have gone back in to all of these paddocks to collect their rubber tyre feeders. Just the tyre feeders nearly killed us! In the photo on the left with the Ariat shirt is Ella, in the middle with two horses is Kiara and this was supposed to be her day off! On the right is Jonny who is a magician in the tractor, operating forklifts and maintaining electric fences. Not in the photo is Tiani and Ellen who were late because the Hunter River had gone over the road at the Hexham bridge. We do have all hands on deck now and I am so lucky to have such a great team of kids toughing out a really, really difficult situation. So far we have managed to pilot our way to this point without any horse injuries or human injuries. It is just a matter of good decisions and a super dedicated team. I feel very privileged.

Boyd Martin – World Number 1 FEI Eventing Rider!!!
Woohoo and congratulations!!
Back in the beginning, Boyd spent eight years at Ryan’s at the NSW Equestrian Centre in Lochinvar. In those days, Boyd was an Australian. He competed in his first 5* event in Adelaide at just 19 years old, riding The Flying Doctor.

Ironically, today—Sunday, May 4th, 2025—the Adelaide 5* is on again here in Australia, and it’s cross-country day. This is the only 5* event in the Southern Hemisphere. Good luck to all the Aussie and New Zealand riders down there in Adelaide today! They’ll all be nervous wrecks, waiting, waiting, waiting to go out the start gates.

Boyd won the Adelaide 5* in 2003 on the Australian Thoroughbred, True Blue Toozac. His dad, Ross Martin, competed in the Winter Olympics for Australia as a cross-country skier, and his mum, Troy Martin, represented the USA as a speed skater. Boyd was bred to be an Olympian and raised to be the best of the best.
Boyd switched to U.S. citizenship when he felt he wasn’t being given a fair go by Equestrian Australia. The USA welcomed him with open arms, promising support and development—and they delivered. Boyd rose from a promising young rider to the best in the world. Proof of the pudding!

In my opinion, the nurturing of our up-and-coming Olympic and World Championship riders—and our horse owners—here in Australia remains draconian. It’s terrible.
Nevertheless, Boyd has never forgotten where he came from. He still rings Billy Bilsborough, a dubious character and biker with a Harley Davidson, who used to be the local horse dealer back in the day. Billy sold off-the-track thoroughbreds to all of us self-important equestrian youngsters in the Hunter Valley. Right now, Billy is really, really sick—and Boyd’s phone calls are a life-saving highlight.

Every now and then, Ryan’s will post something on Facebook—like we are now—and Boyd will leave insightful comments that 100% inspire young riders and leave everyone at Ryan’s falling about laughing.

The photo is Boyd giving Rozzie a great big kiss a long time ago! On the right is Brett Jones who went on to be one of the owners of Virgil who Shane Rose performed on at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and 2024 Paris Olympics.

We love you, Boyd, and we are all incredibly proud of you!!

Fighting floods! 3am Wednesday 30th April Jonny and I are pulling open the floodgates to coincide with low tide at 8.30am. The water behind Jonny is roaring out. The force is scary! Difficult to see in the photo in the dark. Big day today. We will try and get at least 1 metre of water off the property. We will need to shut the flood gates around 8.30 this morning to block out high tide. Rozzie and Ella are also this moment loading Bronze Boy R heading for the Sydney CDI and the Grand Prix dressage classes. Man! Action everywhere!!!

This is a juggling act. 7:30am Monday the 28th of April and we have had so so much rain. We have Windeyers Creek breaking its banks spilling straight in to our property about one kilometre away. This is all the run off from Raymond Terrace. We have the Hunter River rising and this happens to be coinciding with high tide and so shutting our flood gates and blocking up our property from draining. We have the Williams and the Patterson and the Hunter river all converging just before Raymond Terrace with lots of angry flood waters coming together. The weather has now just eased up a bit. Will Windeyers Creek keep flooding and will we have to get all our horses up on to high ground? Will the Hunter River come over the levy bank and we have to get all of our horses on to high ground? Is there more heavy rain coming in the next few days which means we have to get all of our horses on to high ground? Everything is in the balance. Good weather and the property draining at low tide and we will sail through with no problem at all. You can see in the background of this photo that we have four absolutely beautiful mare’s and foal’s in a paddock up to their knees in water. They do actually have a little piece of dry ground in the back corner but we have decided that these mares have to be moved now. The rest of the day is going to be all of us monitoring the Hunter River and high tides and low tides and the ongoing weather situation. If we make a mistake it will be us moving all of the horses to high ground prematurely. Today is going to be lots of stress. In the photo you can see the girls from left to right Ellen, Kiara, Ella and Tiani about to get completely soaked from head to toe as we catch and move these mares.

Me congratulating myself!

The World Cup Dressage Final is on right this moment in Basel Switzerland. Mary Hanna has gone really well so far in the Grand Prix and scored 69.152% and came thirteenth riding Ivanhoe. Well done Mary!

The winner was Glamourdale ridden by Lottie Fry. We have three Glamourdale foals here at Ryan’s and three mare’s expecting Glamourdale foals next season.

Second place getter in the World Cup Grand Prix was Isabell Werth riding DSP Quantaz. DSP Quantaz is by Quaterback. Standing at Ryan’s is Questing R who is also by Quaterback. We have the most spectacular Questing R foals galloping around our paddocks at the moment!

Third place in the Grand Prix in Switzerland is Isabel Freese riding Total Hope. We have two mares here at Ryan’s by Total Hope. One of our colts by Glamourdale is out of a Total Hope mare.

Fourth place getter was Sandra Sysojeva riding Maxima Bella who is by Millenium. I have one mare here at Ryan’s in foal to Millenium. The Millenium semen is a nightmare in terms of quality and it’s associated very, very low positive pregnancy rate. Very expense to! I have one coming. Fingers crossed!!

In fifth place at this World Cup Final is Corentin Pottier riding Gotilas du Feuillard. This horse is by Totilas just as is my young stallion BML Totality who is also now qualified for Grand Prix with me. I am so hoping he is going to be super special! Here at Ryan’s we have invested heavily in the Totilas bloodlines and of course you can see Total Hope is also by Totilas.

These top 5 horses have all scored over 74% with Glamourdale scoring 77.152%. That is my next goal to get one of Ryan’s bred horses with an Australian rider in the saddle in to the top 5 placings at a World Cup Final or an Olympic Games or a World Championships or preferably all 3!!

Well done Heath!! 😂

The photo below is of Ellen McCourt on The Red Wiggle. Ellen is right this moment at the first NSW Event of the season - Sydney One Day Event. Where else in the world could you get a photo like that!? Thank you Britt Grovenor Photography Britt stalks the Ryans girls! In a former life was a groom to some of the top event riders in England. I think she feels sorry for the Ryan girls. The Red Wiggle is a wonderful old campaigner and is very nonchalant about putting up with the uninvited people he had to share his dressage test with. This is a bit of a first because Ellen and Jess from Ryan’s have travelled to SIEC without the team or the red truck on their own and I feel like I’m losing control. Jess Edgar is from Victoria and this is her very first event on her pony in the 65cm class. You are not going to believe this but Jess has done all three phases today and has won! Do you know how hard most of us work to win a 65cm class? Well Jess has done it on her very first effort on her pony, Shiloh. A very big congratulations to Jess.

7am Sunday morning 12th January 2025. This is our first dressage outing for the year at Alexander Park with the Hunter Valley Dressage Association. The temperature is 24 degrees Celsius and we had to shoo off a mob of 30 kangaroos when we pulled up here. Baby horses everywhere. New staff members having their first dressage outing with Ryan’s. How good is this!? What a privilege to be part of the equestrian scene in Australia.

Merry Christmas everyone !! Rozzie calls this the lonely Christmas. Rozzie has been cooking for days. Here we go! 6am and it is staff who have to stay and feed 200 horses and muck out and by 7am survive a staff riding lesson with me yelling at them. Then back to mucking out, supervising mares going to stud, we have one mare threatening to foal and then a champagne breakfast at 11am. Seafood at 1pm and then turkey, ham and plum pudding with threepences starting around 3pm with a crowd of around 17 other lonely people. Lots of drinks. Then I push the kids out to do evening feeds whilst I collapse! Merry Christmas everyone. Heath.
