Such a good post 🩷
So many of us experience these moments, these doubts and questions...

The main thing ive learnt from my job is how much i love my horses, i just enjoy being with them, they are happy and healthy and that is enough. Learning to take the pressure off has been hard and im still working at it, but it makes the world of difference accepting that myself nor my horses are perfect and its okay to go slow, miss a day, add diveristy, just hang out or try something new. Ive learnt to recognise the small milestones, communicate better and listen way more.

Enjoying and loving your horses is enough

The more i learn the more i understand that less is more and knowledge is power

🐴 WHY DO WE NEED TO KEEP THE HORSE’S MOUTH CLOSED?

It’s a question I think we need to ask more often.

One of the primary reasons many riders use a flash or Hanoverian-style noseband is to restrict a horse from opening the can open its mouth.

But before we try to stop a behaviour, perhaps we should be asking:

Why is the horse opening its mouth in the first place?

Opening the mouth, crossing or moving the jaw, putting the tongue over the bit, excessive chewing, head tossing, resisting the contact…

These can easily be interpreted as the horse avoiding the bit or evading the contact.

So we tighten the noseband or We add a flash - We close the mouth.

There are many things worth considering when a horse is repeatedly opening its mouth under saddle, including:

🔸 Bit fit, position and pressure
🔸 Dental discomfort
🔸 Noseband fit and pressure
🔸 Rein tension and rider contact
🔸 Jaw and temporomandibular joint function
🔸 Tongue and hyoid function
🔸 Head and neck position
🔸 Postural stability and balance
🔸 Pain or discomfort elsewhere in the body
🔸 Training, understanding and emotional state

And, of course, horses naturally move their mouths and jaws - so not every open mouth means something is wrong.

The important part is context. When does the horse open its mouth?

When rein pressure increases?

During transitions?

When you ask for flexion?

Only with a particular bit or bridle?

Does it change when the horse is more balanced and posturally supported?

A noseband can change what we see. It doesn’t necessarily change what the horse is feeling.

And sometimes the behaviours we are trying to prevent are the very behaviours we need to pay more attention to.

💥Observe first. Ask why. Then decide what needs to change.

A diagnosis is never a complete puzzle piece for the road forward and there is always multiple lenses to see a diagnosis through.
Looking at the path forward from multiple angles betters our chance to progress and potential recovery

🌟 Exciting News for Bitless Riders! 🌟

After listening to member feedback and engaging in extensive discussion, the HRCAV Executive is excited to announce that we are in the planning stages of introducing an Unofficial Bitless Dressage Competition Trial.

This initiative aims to better support our members and their horses by providing a wider range of gear options to enhance training and competition experiences.

To help guide this exciting new venture, unofficial bitless competitions will be overseen by the newly established Bitless Bridle Working Group.

The trial will see unofficial Bitless Dressage Classes offered at selected dressage competitions. As interest in bitless riding continues to grow, these classes will provide riders with the opportunity to compete in a dressage environment while using bitless bridles.

The bitless classes will run as separate sections within existing competition day programs.

Whether you're already riding bitless or simply curious to learn more, this is a fantastic opportunity to get involved and contribute to this exciting initiative.

We are currently seeking expressions of interest from existing HRCAV judges and clubs who would like to be involved in or support this initiative. If you are interested, please contact the HRCAV Office [email protected] for further information.
