🐾 3 Mistakes That Sabotage Dog Training (And How to Fix Them)
Most "bad dog" moments are actually timing, consistency, or expectation problems. Here's what we see most, working with dogs across obedience, behaviour, and detection:
1. Rewarding or Correcting at the wrong moment.
Dogs connect consequences to the exact second they happen, not the whole sequence. Reward too late and you reinforce the wrong thing.
Fix: Land it within 1-2 seconds. A marker word or clicker helps close the gap.
2. Inconsistency across people, places & situations
"Perfect at home, ignores me at the park" means the command was never truly generalised.
Fix: Proof the behaviour in new locations, with different people, and around distractions.
3. Managing the Behaviour Instead of Meeting the Need Behind it
This is the mistake we see most often with high drive and working breeds specifically, but it applies across the board. Owners try to train away a symptom; barking, chewing, pulling, reactivity, without addressing what's actually driving it. Boredom, understimulation, anxiety, or an unmet instinct will keep resurfacing in some form until the underlying need is met, no matter how well the symptom itself is suppressed.
A dog that chews the couch because it's under-stimulated will often find a new outlet once the chewing is "corrected" because the correction never touched the actual problem. The same goes for reactivity rooted in anxiety, or hyperactivity rooted in unmet drive.
Fix: Ask what the behaviour is achieving for your dog before you train it away.
Training isn't about a "better" dog. It's about better timing, consistency, and understanding what's really going on. 🐕
