Some patients arrive at our hospital weighing less than a block of chocolate 🍫

This tiny kitten, just one week old and weighing only 120 grams, was dropped into the care of AES Canberra.

When our Operations Manager, Geoff, arrived at the hospital that morning, he was greeted by the tiny patient and quickly got to work, syringe-feeding milk replacer to ensure the kitten had some much-needed nourishment before continuing on to Canberra Street Cat Alliance.

Sometimes the smallest patients make the biggest impression 💙

We're happy to report the little one has since been transferred and is doing well so far.

Reminder as we spend more time outside ☀️

Sticks aren't safe fetch toys. They can splinter and cause serious injuries to your pet's mouth, throat or stomach. Some cases even require emergency surgery.

Choose safer, pet-friendly fetch toys to keep playtime fun and injury-free ⚾

🐶 Could your dog be hiding pain?

Dogs are incredibly good at masking discomfort, which can make it difficult to know when something is wrong. From changes in behaviour and appetite to difficulty moving, there are several subtle signs that could indicate your pet is hurting and due for a trip to the vet.

Knowing what to look for can help you get them the care they need sooner and keep them comfortable and happy. 💙

School holidays mean more adventures for our pets... but they can also mean more emergencies.

With pets spending more time out and about, we often see an increase in injuries, tick paralysis cases, snake bites and other unexpected accidents during the holiday period.

Before you head off on your next adventure, take 30 seconds to save your local emergency vet number in your phone. 📱 It could make all the difference when every minute counts.

Stay safe and enjoy the school holidays 💙

As the weather warms up, snake activity starts to increase again 🐍

Spring is a time when snakes become more active as they emerge to bask, hunt and breed. It's the perfect time for pet owners to stay alert and be aware of the signs a snake may be nearby.

If you spot a snake, keep pets well away and contact a licensed snake catcher. If your pet is bitten by a snake, contact your local vet immediately.

Today on R U OK? Day, we're reminded that a simple conversation can have a lasting impact 💛

In busy workplaces and everyday life, it’s easy to miss the signs that someone may be struggling. Taking a moment to genuinely check in with a colleague, friend, family member or neighbour can help them feel seen, heard and supported.

Let's make asking "Are you OK?" more than a once-a-year reminder. Start the conversation, listen without judgement, and help create a culture of care every day.

We all know the common signs of mild allergic reactions in pets, like hives, itching, or a runny nose. But do you know how to spot a severe allergic reaction? ⚠️

While uncommon, dogs can experience life-threatening allergic reactions that require immediate veterinary attention. If your dog is showing signs of an allergic reaction, or you suspect they may have been exposed to an allergen, contact your vet straight away. Never take a "wait and see" approach.

Even seemingly mild symptoms can progress to anaphylaxis, particularly with repeated exposure to the same allergen. When it comes to allergic reactions, early treatment can make all the difference 💙

Meerkat or dog? 🤣

Harvey the 4yo dachshund has perfected the art of the upright sit. He'd feel right at home in the Kalahari Desert. And those gorgeous heterochromia eyes are the cherry on top 😍

Little Maggie gave our nurses a challenge earlier this month!
For teeny tiny paws, we need teeny tiny IV catheters.
Just 8 weeks old, Maggie was referred to us after experiencing vomiting and low blood sugar levels. After an overnight stay in hospital and lots of TLC from our team, she showed great improvement and was able to head home to continue recovering with her family. ❤️‍🩹

Gorgeous Frankie was brought in to us when his owner noticed that he was quiet and distant after getting into some grapes! He was admitted and diagnosed with an acute kidney injury. After some supportive care in hospital, close monitoring and frequent blood testing, Frankie began to respond to treatment.
As you can see, on Frankie's third day in hospital he was feeling much better and all he wanted to do was play, something our nurses were overjoyed to participate in ❤️
You know your pet best, when something seems off, visit your veterinarian to investigate.
