🐾🧡 Meet Tyla! 🧡🐾

15 week old
Female DSH

Tyla presented to Harvey Pets and Vets recently after becoming unwell. She was assessed by Dr Teanna, who could feel something in her intestine. This led her to believe she may have something stuck – also known as a foreign body. Dr Teanna was able to perform a radiograph on Tyla which confirmed her suspicions. Dr Teanna discussed the case with Dr Emma, and Tyla was transferred to Collie Veterinary Clinic to undergo surgery.

Dr Emma was able to proceed to surgery and removed a tinsel-covered toy from Tyla’s small intestine! Tyla recovered well and went home the next day. Tyla was returned for a check 3 days after the surgery and had returned to her vivacious self.

Tyla’s prompt recovery is due to her diligent owner bringing her in for assessment when she became unwell, the availability of quick diagnostics, and the ability for multiple vets across different sites to work together for the best outcome for our patients.

If your pet is unwell – don’t wait! Rapid assessment allows our team to provide optimal care for the best possible outcome.

🚨 URGENT: Bird Flu Detected in Western Australia

Western Australia has now confirmed cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (bird flu) in wild birds.
This marks a significant and serious wildlife health event, and authorities are actively monitoring the situation.

We ask that you do not bring in any wildlife, pet birds or backyard poultry into the clinic.
📞Please call us first if you have any concerns for you pets health.

While the risk to the general public is still considered low, this is a rapidly evolving outbreak with potential impacts on wildlife, pets, and poultry.

To help prevent spread and protect wildlife:
❌ Do NOT touch or move sick or dead birds
🐦 Keep pets away from birds, wetlands, and carcasses
📍 Report multiple sick or dead birds immediately to DPIRD WA or local authorities
🧼 Wash hands thoroughly after outdoor activity near wildlife areas
🚫 Do not attempt to rescue or handle wildlife without trained support

🧠 Why this matters
Bird flu can spread quickly among bird populations and has caused major wildlife die-offs overseas. Early reporting and strict biosecurity are critical to limiting its impact in Australia.

Did you know there are an estimated 780,000 feral cats in WA alone? And that’s the conservative estimate! 🐾🧡🐈‍⬛

Kitten season has begun. In the past 7 days we have had 10 cats/kittens handed into the Harvey clinic alone. As the weeks go on we expect to see that number increasing. These felines are a combination of feral/stray, dumped, abandoned or untraceable due to lack of microchipping/identification such as registration tags. A number of the females handed in have been pregnant. Rescues are at capacity, and funding is limited.

Harvey Pets and Vets can assist with your desexing and microchipping needs 🐈
Please contact the clinic on 08 9787 2816 or email [email protected]

If you require assistance to cover the cost of your feline friends sterilisation, programs such as Spey It Forward, RSPCA Sterilisation Program, and even the Shire of Harvey Cat Sterilisation Program can provide assistance to reduce costs, reduce the number of unwanted litters, reduce straying and reduce spread of disease. Please contact the organisations directly for further information.

Anaphylaxis in Dogs!

Did you know dogs and cats can also experience severe allergic reactions?

Lovely Miss Leila presented to the clinic first thing Friday morning after standing on a bee and having an allergic reaction. The signs of anaphylaxis in dogs are vomiting, diarrhoea, pale gums, and panting. They can also have facial swelling, hives and drooling.

After an initial assessment with nurse Holly and Dr Teanna, Leila was admitted for anaphylaxis treatment, monitoring and supportive care. The team was able to identify and remove the offending stinger from Leila’s paw. Thanks to Leila’s owners bringing her in for prompt attention, she made a full recovery and was able to return home that day.

If you are concerned your dog may have had an allergic reaction please phone the clinic on 08 9787 2816
