With another hot weekend coming up we need to be a bit aware of the options our chickens have to stay cool.
Chicken coops should be under shade and well ventilated or at least parts of their run area well shaded. If they free-range the back yard they will often find themselves a cool spot and dig a hole and sit in the cooler ground.
Make sure they have plenty of fresh cool water available at all times but be sure to top up in late afternoon/early evening as they may not drink alot during the hottest parts of day then heed a big drink before going to bed.
Some people make ice treats for their chickens, this is lovely but not necessary if you dont have time.
Important DO NOT Wet them by submerging in a bucket or hosing them. This causes their festher to stick together and their skin and chickens stay cool by spreading their wings and fluffing feather to insulate and regulate their bodyvtemperature. Often a misting system on the coop or a fine sprinker near the cool helps cool the area down.

Like us they may seem a bit lethargic the following day you can offer some electrolyte water and again just making sure fresh water and feed available the following days to help them recover.
Some chickens if they get too hot may not lay eggs or lay strange shape egg but normally get back to normal after a day or so.

It's coming up to the weekend and getting closer to the warmer weather to spend more time outside. Perfect time to add some cute cluckers to the family and start or continue your journey of the chicken and having the best eggs you can eat.
Browns just over 15 weeks and will be ready to lay by the time they settle in. We also have our ever gorgeous silies in many colours.
We have lots of availability this weekend for appointment and as always pride ourselves on giving advice information to their new owners. Cash and Card accepted.

A question we get asked often is can I have silkies and commercial layer birds together. The answer is sometimes. Silkies are a very docile smaller bird compared to the commercial layer varieties and so while it is possible there are methods which need to be used to try and prevent/reduce problems but also you would need a back up plan ready to go if its not going well.
We would never recommend putting young silkies or lone silkies into a established flock of commercial layers. Not only will the bigger girls bully and potentially injure(and kill) the silkies but they tend to gang up and prevent the silkies to feed, water and shelter.
As we grow and breed silkies and have commercial layers too we try and raise some together for those wanting to have both in their flock, also by having the younger browns grow up with older silkies they learn to tolerate and integrate prior to having a size and strength difference. If you are wanting to add silkies to your existing flock we are happy to guide you step by step on how to do this as safely as possible. But if you would like a ready made mixed flock feel free to make an appointment and buy both breeds from us. These brown are 12 weeks of age and are in a pen with 18+ week old silkies. Having a mixed flock is great as you get consistent supply beautiful home laid eggs as well as having some adorable docile fluffy girls to look pretty and give the more occasional egg.
