Colic season has arrived! We've had a wave of colic's these last two weeks, including sand accumulation. I love seeing you all, but I also love healthy, happy horses. Horses are indiscriminate eaters at times, and as we have the first green flush they'll be eating shoots; dirt, sand and all.

Psyllium husks are the best way at preventing sand accumulation cases. For me, they have two mechanisms of action; 1) the husk is a physical 'scoop' picking up the accumulation, and 2) the kids-glue-paste it forms when it contacts water. Plain dry psyllium is therefore good to use, but it's very unpalatable to most horses.

The problem with pelleted versions of psyllium husk is that they lose a lot of their actions. First they have to be micronised (ground) losing their scooping action, and secondly, most pelleting processes involve steaming. This means the ground husks have also been pre-exposed to water.
