🐑✂ Lets talk Vasectomies ✂🐑
What is a teaser ram?
There are two types:
1️⃣a ram that has been vasectomised ✂
2️⃣ a wether that has been injected with testosterone (hormone). 💉
A bilateral vasectomy is performed to create a non-fertile ram, that can still identify ewes in heat. Pictured here is Dr Brodhi & Dr Larns, out on farm completing the procedure on some rams recently 🙌
Because sheep do not cycle well prior to the summer solstice, which is usually around December 22nd, a teaser ram is placed in with ewes to elicit the "ram effect", getting them to start cycling early! 🐑
The ewe will ovulate 2-5 days after the teaser goes in, having a silent heat. They will then return to heat 19-25days later, after the initial vasectomised ram introduction! This is when the real rams join their ladies 💪
What are the benefits to teasing?
Teasers are used to stimulate the ewes to cycle, so the main benefit is to increase the number of lambs born within the first 2-3 weeks of lambing!
