🐾 Patient Update: Badger 🐾

Badger had his left hock joint successfully fused by Dr Scott with a plate over 5 years ago after an accident that caused extensive ligament damage. Recently, he developed some irritation and swelling that was causing pain and stiffness. We elected to remove his plate to improve his quality of life! ❤️

🦴 Did you know?

Orthopedic plates and screws placed in dogs are generally designed to stay in permanently. However, we occasionally need to remove them if:

• The plate rubs against the skin and causes irritation.
• The implant site becomes infected.
• The plate causes cold weather sensitivity. ❄️

Cold weather sensitivity can happen because the plate sits directly beneath the skin, and it readily conducts the cold into underlying tissue. This causes winter discomfort and stiffness, which resolves entirely once the plate is out.

🦮 The Road to Recovery

Once the plate and screws are removed, the empty holes in the bone can make the leg temporarily weak. Badger will need another short period of strict confinement and leash walking for a few weeks. This allows the empty screw holes to safely fill with new bone before he can run or jump.

We look forward to seeing Badger's recovery and getting him back on his regular walks around town! ☀️

Once a grass seed penetrates the skin, it can be like finding a needle in a haystack, especially if it has been migrating for some time. Careful, meticulous surgical exploration is often required. Dr Lewis spent over an hour working patiently and precisely to locate this tiny culprit.🌾

Poor Henry, one wrong step and he found himself with fractures to both his radius and ulna.😢
Fortunately, Dr Scott was able to expertly repair the fractures using a stainless steel plate and screws.
After some well earned R&R, Henry's back in the truck doing what he loves ❤
