πŸ₯πŸ”₯ THE DUNWURKN CREW DID THE THING! πŸ”₯πŸ₯

Dogs. Discs. Good times. πŸ’œπŸ’šπŸΎ

What a day at MADD Unleashed & Unstoppable!

We had some great throws, some brilliant catches, some questionable throws πŸ˜‚ and plenty of missed catches… but one thing’s for sure, the dogs had an absolute blast!

And that’s what it’s all about! 🐾❀️

🌟 NEXT 🌟
15 months old and out for her FIRST EVER outing! 😍 Three rounds in Roller Dog and this girl was BRILLIANT! She returned every roller in a brand-new environment and absolutely nailed her rollers. What a way to kick off her disc dog journey! πŸ’œ

πŸ† BONUS πŸ†
Our star of the day! ⭐ Two first places in Distance / Accuracy Roller Dog, BOTH with qualifiers! πŸ”₯ Plus, a second place in Catch 22 β€” what a day for this team!

πŸ’œ TRENDY πŸ’œ
A second place in Catch 22 Disc Dog, with just ONE catch… but when you make it a 20-point zone catch, you make it count! πŸ˜‚πŸ”₯ Her Distance / Accuracy rounds were also heaps of fun, including a spectacular 4.5-point catch in one round. What a girl!

πŸ’™ SNEAK πŸ’™
A fourth place in Distance / Accuracy – Throw It! Just couldn’t quite make up for Mum’s questionable throwing decisions today. 🀣 We’ll blame the handler on that one!

❀️ ADDICT ❀️
No placings today, but plenty of tail wags, fun and happy dog moments. And honestly, that’s a win in itself! 🐾

πŸ’š EXTRA πŸ’š
A third place in Roller Dog Send Zone! 🎯 No qualifier this time, but a great effort from this team!

🐾 POUNCE & QUEUE 🐾
Our official support crew for the day! πŸ’œπŸ’š These two joined us for a fun social outing, taking in the sights, sounds and excitement of competition life. A big day out for the puppies, and they’ve well and truly clocked off now! πŸ˜‚ Both are totally OUT to it, enjoying a big afternoon nap after all the excitement. πŸ’€πŸΆ

From first outings to qualifying rounds, podium finishes, puppy adventures and plenty of laughs, the Dunwurkn crew had a fantastic day doing what we love. πŸ₯πŸ•

A huge thank you to the MADD crew for putting on another fantastic event, and to Dog Sports Down Under (DSDU) for building a sport and community where dogs and handlers can get out there, have fun, challenge themselves and celebrate the sport together. πŸ’œπŸ’šπŸ₯πŸΎ

Because at the end of the day, it doesn’t have to be perfect to be brilliant. Sometimes the best moments come from the questionable throws, the missed catches and the dogs who remind us exactly why we do this! πŸ˜‚β€οΈ

🐾 FOUNDATION FRIDAY #17

πŸ₯ THROWING MECHANICS MATTER

Consistency Builds Confidence

Ever wondered why your dog can make an amazing catch one moment... then completely miss the next? πŸ€”

Sometimes, it's not the dog.

It's the throw! πŸ₯

As handlers, we spend a lot of time teaching our dogs to chase, track and catch.

But how much time do we spend training ourselves to throw?

Every throw gives your dog information.

πŸ₯ Release angle β€” influences how the disc flies.

🎯 Direction β€” determines where your dog needs to travel.

πŸ“ Height β€” affects how your dog positions themselves for the catch.

πŸ’¨ Speed & spin β€” influence the stability and flight of the disc.

⏱️ Timing β€” helps your dog meet the disc at the right moment.

When those things change dramatically from throw to throw, our dogs have to keep adjusting to a different picture.

And that can make learning harder than it needs to be.

πŸ’œ THE DSDU CONCEPT

Consistency builds confidence.

A predictable throw gives your dog a better opportunity to understand the game.

We're not trying to teach our dogs to catch every wild throw we send their way!

We're helping them develop the skills to read, track and confidently catch a disc.

And that starts with us.

⭐ Practise consistent releases.

πŸ₯ Learn how different angles affect flight.

🎯 Aim for a predictable landing area.

🐾 Match your throws to your dog's current ability.

πŸ“ˆ Add variation as your dog's skills develop.

The better we understand our own throwing, the better we can support our dog's learning.

πŸ’‘ DID YOU KNOW?

You don't actually need your dog to practise your Disc Dog skills!

In fact, some of the most valuable Disc Dog training happens without the dog on the field.

Practising your throwing mechanics independently allows you to focus on your own technique without asking your dog to chase every attempt.

And here's another important point...

A longer throw isn't necessarily a better throw.

A well-placed, predictable disc at a comfortable distance can be far more valuable to a developing team than a spectacular throw your dog has little chance of catching.

🎯 TRY IT THIS WEEK

Leave the dog at home for this one! πŸ˜‰

Grab a few discs and head outside with a target.

Try this simple throwing exercise:

🎯 Step 1: Choose a target approximately 10 metres away.

πŸ₯ Step 2: Throw five discs using the same technique.

πŸ‘€ Step 3: Watch how each disc flies. Is the flight level and predictable?

πŸ“ Step 4: Look at where they land. Are they grouping together or going everywhere?

πŸ”„ Step 5: Adjust one thing at a time and try again.

Don't focus on throwing harder or further.

Focus on making your throws repeatable.

Once you can consistently place the disc where you intend, you've created a much better learning opportunity for your dog.

And remember...

Your dog is learning to catch. You're learning to throw. You're both part of the team! πŸ’œ

🐾 FOUNDATION FRIDAY #16

⭐ FINISH ON A WIN

Successful Learning

We've all done it.

Your dog nails the behaviour, so you think...

"That was great β€” let's do it one more time!"

And then one more becomes another... and suddenly the great session you were having starts to unravel. πŸ˜…

Knowing when to stop is an important training skill too.

A good training session doesn't need to be long.

It needs to leave your dog thinking:

"That was fun. Let's do that again!"

πŸ’œ THE DSDU CONCEPT

Success builds future learning.

When your dog gives you a great repetition:

⭐ Mark it
πŸŽ‰ Reward it
πŸ’œ Celebrate it
🐾 And sometimes... finish there!

Ending after success helps maintain enthusiasm and gives your dog a strong reinforcement history for the behaviour you're building.

You don't need to keep training until your dog gets tired, distracted or starts making mistakes.

More repetitions aren't always better repetitions.

πŸ’‘ DID YOU KNOW?

Dogs don't need to master a behaviour in one training session.

Learning develops across many short experiences, and stepping away from a skill doesn't mean learning has stopped.

Coming back later also gives you useful information.

🧠 Does your dog remember the behaviour?
🐾 Do they offer it more quickly?
⭐ Are they more confident?
πŸ“ˆ Is the skill becoming easier?

That's progress.

🎯 TRY IT THIS WEEK

Before you start training, decide what a great stopping point might look like.

Maybe it's:

πŸ₯ A clean catch and enthusiastic return
🟣 A confident obstacle commitment
🎯 A behaviour offered without help
🐾 A really good repetition of a foundation skill
πŸ’œ A dog that's still asking to play

When you get that moment...

reward it and call it.

Don't wait until your dog tells you the session has gone on too long.

Leave them wanting another turn.

⭐ ONE LAST THING...

"Finish on a win" doesn't mean your dog has to be perfect.

A win might simply be one small step forward from where you started.

Celebrate progress.

Then come back and build on it another day.

🐾 Strong foundations build great teams.
