LAMINITIS WARNING- KNOW THE EARLY SIGNS! 🌱

At Kalil Equine, we are always planning ahead. The weather influences many of our business decisions, but it can also have a significant impact on horses and their health.

We have recently been blessed with decent rainfall combined with unseasonably warm weather and the grass is growing like crazy! While this is wonderful to see, it can also increase the risk of laminitis, particularly for horses and those easy keeping, tubby ponies.

Over the years, we have cared for a number of horses and ponies suffering from mild through to severe laminitis. Regardless of the severity, it is imperative that an appropriate treatment and rehabilitation plan is put in place immediately.

The sooner assistance is provided, the sooner we can begin managing the horse’s pain and work to prevent further damage within the hoof. We work closely with our local veterinarians, as well as specialist equine veterinarians in the Hunter, to ensure each horse receives the appropriate treatment and ongoing rehabilitation plan.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if your horse or pony requires specialised care. At Kalil Equine, we have undercover sand yards suitable for severe cases, along with multiple ice therapy options to assist with intensive management.

Early intervention can make all the difference🐓

Today we hosted a completely booked out clinic with the amazing Dr Louise Cosgrove, who made the trip all the way from Queensland to be with us. It was incredible to see such a great turnout, with plenty of locals joining us as well as people travelling 9+ hours with their horses to attend.

With 1 September fast approaching, there were plenty of mares being checked and plans being put in place as we get ready for another exciting breeding season. There’s always something special about this time of year, the anticipation, the planning and the hope of what might be arriving next year šŸ¤Ž

A huge thank you to everyone who came along today, especially those who travelled such a long way to be here. And of course, a very special thank you to Dr Louise Cosgrove for making such a huge effort to come down from Queensland and share her knowledge and expertise with us. We’re incredibly grateful to have had you here at Kalil.

Every horse that arrives at Kalil becomes part of a story, but this property has been telling stories for generations. There are plenty of places with brand new facilities, the latest technology and every piece of flash equipment money can buy. We value good equipment too, it plays an important role in the care we provide, but some things simply can’t be built or bought.

You can’t buy history. You can’t create character, and you can’t replace the soul of a place that’s been part of horses lives for generations. There’s something special about walking into a building knowing that countless horses have stood beneath the same roof long before ours ever did.

Recently, we uncovered ā€œ1941ā€ etched into the concrete floor of one of our stable blocks, suggesting at least part of the building was renovated more than 80 years ago. The brickwork, heavy timber beams and construction all hint at an even older history. We’ve also been researching Guntawang’s past, including its connection to Louisa Lawson, who was born on the property in 1848. It has us wondering… what was this building originally? Some say it was the original house, some say it was an old shearing shed. Others say it was a ruin that was restored into stables. It always leaves the question of what would it have looked like or been like back in the day.

In the mid to late 1980s PLANET KINGDOM stood on Guntawang. Unfortunately he suffered a serious paddock accident and was put down. Recently, I have been told he is buried here. PLANET KINGDOM was the sire of champion racehorse MIGHTY KINGDOM who also resided here after his sires death, and also sired multiple stakes horses. My thoughts always go back to imagine what stories these buildings could tell if they could talk, imagine the amazing horses that this property got to be home to.

It sparked a curiosity about just how many horses, horsemen and chapters this building has witnessed over the decades. The more we learn about Guntawang’s history, the more remarkable it becomes. Long before Kalil Equine existed, this property played its own important role in Australia’s pastoral and equine history. Every weathered brick, timber beam and worn floor carries the marks of those who came before us.

Today, those same walls provide a safe place for horses to spell, rehabilitate, foal and prepare for their next chapter. This stable block usually houses our rehab horses, but for breeding season we shuffle everything around and these stables become our mare and foal stables and the rehab horses get to use the big barn that’s usually used for show horse prep or yearling prep.

It’s a privilege not only to care for horses, but also to be custodians of a property with such a rich heritage particularly in the Thoroughbred industry. Some buildings are simply stables. Others have spent generations shaping the stories of horses. We’re proud that this one still does šŸŽ

Happy Birthday to our amazing horses! šŸ“šŸŽ‰

How lucky are we to share our lives with these incredible animals? They challenge us, teach us patience, humble us, make us laugh, and somehow always know when we need them most.

Alongside Kalil Equine, I’m incredibly proud to have two special mares who are now the foundation of Arrabell Performance Horses. Fairways De Nira (De Niro/Hampton) and Maccarthur Stella Mara (Sir Donnerhall/Sirocco/Ruiz Soler/Falkland) represent years of planning, dreaming, and investing in the future. As Horse’s Birthday marks the official start of a new age for every horse, it also means breeding season is just around the corner and I can’t wait to see what the next generation will bring.

Here’s to many more happy, healthy years filled with green grass, kind hands, plenty of treats, and dreams yet to be born.

Happy Birthday, horses. We really are the lucky ones ā¤ļø

One question we get asked quite a bit is whether we geld c**ts here at Kalil and then spell them afterwards.

The answer is yes, we do!

We work closely with our fantastic local vets, who come to Kalil to perform the procedure. The geldings then stay on with us for their recovery and spelling, allowing them to heal in a calm, familiar environment without the stress of travelling.

With daily monitoring, appropriate aftercare and plenty of room to move, we help make the recovery period as smooth and comfortable as possible.

If you’ve got a c**t that needs gelding, get in touch to chat about how we can help.

Above Board and Feared, trained by Mack Griffiths, putting on a show with a few laps of the paddock before settling in to enjoy the lush green grass.

Keeping a watchful eye on it all was their ever reliable nanny, Ashanti Jewel.

These moments are what a well earned spell is all about, stretching the legs, having a play and simply enjoying being horses šŸ’š

šŸ’” Upgrades continuing at Kalil šŸ’”

It’s been a busy few weeks with plenty happening behind the scenes to get ready for breeding season.

We’ve installed new LED floodlights at the vet shed, both inside and out, as well as around the foaling yards. Fair warning though… if you drive in at night, you might think you’ve accidentally ended up at the MCG šŸ˜†

Every improvement, big or small, helps make life a little easier and allows us to continue providing the best care possible for the horses in our care.

The countdown is officially on, with our first mares that are booked in, ready to arrive. We can’t wait to welcome them and kick off another foaling season.

A huge thank you to Alex Munns for another fantastic job with the lighting. Your workmanship is always second to none and we really appreciate your help bringing these upgrades to life! šŸ‘šŸ“

We’re incredibly honoured and excited to share that Kalil Equine has been nominated for Excellence in Agriculture & Primary Industries at the Magnificent Mudgee Business Awards! šŸŽ

This nomination means so much because it reflects more than just our business- it reflects the incredible community we’re lucky enough to be part of. From our wonderful clients and fellow businesses we work alongside every day, Kalil Equine simply wouldn’t be what it is without your support.

A very special thank you also goes to the owners of the beautiful, historic Guntawang property for entrusting us with such a remarkable place to call home. Having the privilege of caring for horses on a property with so much history within the racing industry is something we never take for granted and we’re incredibly grateful for their ongoing support.

We’re proud to call the Mudgee region home and to contribute to an industry that plays such an important role in our local community. Being recognised alongside so many outstanding local businesses is something we’re truly grateful for.

If you’ve supported us, followed our journey, or entrusted us with your horses, we’d be incredibly grateful if you could take a moment to vote for Kalil Equine.
