The first day of the 2026/27 snake season is here.

The warmer days are starting and the snakes will start to come out of their winter brumation.

If you see one in your yard keep an eye on it and call me to have it relocated...

If you see one in the wild keep a distance from it and let it go on its way.

As for first aid i would highly advise a first aid course or if thats not possible youtubing Australian snake first aid and watch the video a couple of times.

Stay safe have an amazing summer and if you see me on the street come say gday and have a chat.

Shift your perspective, change the outcome. ๐ŸŒฟ

Conflict often happens when we misinterpret animal behavior. While a snake standing its ground can seem intimidating, it is almost always a last-resort defense mechanism. From their eye level, we are gigantic, fast-moving, and potentially life-threatening.

By understanding the "snake view," we can make smarter choices:

Give them room: Step back and allow a clear escape path.

Stay calm: Quick movements can be perceived as an attack.

Protect ecosystems: Remember that snakes keep rodent populations in check and maintain healthy environments.

Coexistence starts with understanding. Help shift the narrative around snakes!

I wanted to touch on this topic because I've already seen posts and comments on Facebook about antivenom for pets, costs, and the financial comparison against antivenom for humans.

It can be a sensitive subject for pet owners who have experienced a snake bite in a beloved pet.
I've been through it myself!
And whether or not your pet pulls through, or whether treatment is an option, we're left with a veterinary bill...

I also wanted to write about this because I want pet owners to be better informed, but also because vets cop quite a bit of unfair criticism about the costs of antivenom and treatment.

When our pets are bitten by a snake, it's not JUST antivenom that's factored into the final cost, it's all the other supportive care and medications that go with it, and it can also mean "all hands on deck" for critically ill patients, which can impact clinic workflow, tending to other clients, and staying back after hours to monitor patients.

Processing starts the same way, but the final product is different for humans and pets...
A horse gets small, controlled doses of venom over time which triggers the immune system to build up antibodies, and then it's extraction time.

This process does not harm the horses. The horses are the main part of the process, and it's important for them to be healthy and well looked after long term.

To break it down, the process looks a little something like this:

Venom collection
Immunisation
Antibody production
Plasma extraction
Antibody processing
Purification
Testing
Formulation and packaging
Distribution

Where it splits from human use or animal use is what happens to those antibodies.

The antibody's tail is removed, making it much safer with a lower risk of reaction. (Regulated by the Therapeutic Goods Administration)

The tail is often left on, meaning it lasts longer in the bloodstream but carries a slightly higher risk of reaction. (Veterinary antivenom falls under agricultural regulators like the APVMA)

The "tail" is the part of the antibody that isn't actually needed to grab onto venom, it's the part the body sometimes reacts to, since it's foreign animal protein.

The cost people quote for human antivenom is usually a wholesale or hospital cost and not what a patient pays, because in a public healthcare system, that cost gets absorbed or heavily subsidised by the state.

In vet medicine, there's no subsidy for pet antivenom, the full wholesale cost for antivenom vials lands entirely on the vet clinic, who then generally place a small markup on the price to cover antivenom storage (it requires constant cold chain storage), but antivenom has a short shelf life, so any vials that expire unused have to be written off as a straight loss.

Some clinics see snake bite pets more so than others. Here in Bendigo, clinics situated towards the outer suburbs see higher cases of snake bites, as well as McIvor Rd Vet, who also acts as an emergency after hours vet.

Some clinics need to stock extra quantities of antivenom consistently over spring and summer.

So keep in mind that a bigger invoice for a pet isn't a marked up version of the human product. For our pets, it's an unsubsidised product, with some clinic overheads layered on top.

That bill is a hard thing to be handed when you're already worried sick about your pet, and it's fair to feel that.
It's just not the vet's fault... clinics are not profiteering off your worst day.
Payment options for unexpected veterinary visits help ease the financial burden, and almost all vets are set up to cater for various payment options.

Thankfully nowadays there are more options to cover unexpected vet bills.

- Zip Pay
- VetPay
- Afterpay

As we're leading up to spring, it's a good idea to research the nearest location of your local vet clinics and even give them a call to discuss snake bite procedure.

If your pet is bitten, please call ahead of arrival to your nearest vet to ensure they have antivenom currently in stock.
