Soil fertility is one of the biggest and easiest leavers that producers have to boost productivity. Whilst phosphorus is historically the most limiting nutrient, there has been an emergence of some 'secondary' nutrient deficiencies, including sulfur, potassium and boron.
Join TFS, South East Local Land Services and CSIRO on the 11th September in Yass to see and hear about a range of MLA-funded pasture research:
- Trials looking at the use of sulfur, potassium and boron fertiliser
- Demonstration work trialling the use of serradellas as a legume option for acid soils

On Tuesday, Gordon from SheepMetriX and Camilla headed out to Paling Yards to help weigh and condition score the ewes for our climate smart flock management demo site. The demo mob of twinners have been precision fed and monitored using optiweigh, and have gained a condition score of .5 over the past month.

This mob will be compared with three other groups—twins, mixed single/twins, and unscanned ewes managed under standard practices—to compare lambing performance and weaning weights.

They’ll start lambing in a week or so and check out the feed they’re going on to!

This project is supported by the Australian Government through funding from the Climate-Smart Agriculture Program under the Natural Heritage Trust.

Thanks to everyone who came along to our Seasonal Update last night in Goulburn. Matt from South East Local Land Services delivered a seasonal forecast using the data from farming forecaster. Many of the probes west of Goulburn and Crookwell are at very high moisture levels, which will mean some growth in September but we’ll still be reliant on Spring rainfall. Matt also took us through BOM’s latest forecasts, for a slightly wetter end to spring/start to summer.
Mark Barber from Elders Goulburn then delivered a markets report, and emphasised that global factors (particularly in US and China) are the main influences on prices.
Presentations are available to be sent to any members who weren’t able to attend.

Yesterday we visited Paling Yards with Gordon from SheepMetriX as part of the Climate Smart Agriculture Program, supported by the Australian Government, where we condition scored the ewes in preparation for lambing.

The goal for the twinner mob is to achieve a condition score of 3.2 before lambing, demonstrating how precision feeding can improve lambing percentages and overall flock performance.

We'll be back in a few weeks to select their final lambing paddocks and check on their progress. In the meantime, the ewes are being fed a ration in containment lots, helping preserve valuable pasture for the lambing period.
