Native Vegetation Mapping went live on all NSW farmland on 31 August. NSW Farmers are delivering an event tomorrow, the 14th October in Goulburn to help farmers understand what this means on their farm, the way they work and their land value. There are processes and things that farmers now must do to be able to operate on their land and to avoid legal issues. Register here -

Thanks to everyone who joined Tablelands Farming Systems for our Merrill workshop on Friday.

A big thank you to Matt Lieschke from South East Local Land Services and Nick Linden from Agriculture Victoria for sharing their knowledge and practical insights into identifying and managing feed shortages, maintenance feeding and getting the most out of lambs through intensive finishing.

Nick reinforced the importance of getting the basics right. In a seven-week lamb finishing program, one bad week represents 14% of the entire program — a reminder that consistency matters and producers can't afford to lose valuable time through poor rations or management early on.

Thanks also to Charlie for opening up the property again and providing useful insight into his approach to maintenance feeding and the building of containment lots.

Three new soil moisture probes have been installed at Roslyn, Rugby and Lost River, expanding the local Farming Forecaster network, thanks to funding from the Scaling Success program.

Installed by Cropsol, the probes will help monitor soil moisture conditions across the district, giving farmers valuable local information to support decisions around pasture growth, feed availability and seasonal conditions.

The more sites we have monitoring conditions across the region, the better the picture we can build of what's happening in our soils and what it means for our farms.

A big thank you to our new probe hosts for being part of the network. Data should be live on the site early next year.

Last week, Peter Fogarty from Soil and Land Conservation visited 3 sites in the Tablelands to understand their soil type, prior to 3 new moisture probes being installed. The three new moisture probes will be installed in Roslyn, Lost River and Rugby, thanks to funding from the Scaling Success program under the Future Drought Fund. Join TFS and Delta Agribusiness for a practical field day exploring the initial results from our Grains Research and Development Corporation funded trial, investigating the suitability of alternative legumes in the Tablelands.
We'll explore the faba bean and vetch crop performance, nitrogen fixation, legumes in the whole farming system and feeding faba beans to livestock.
We’ll also look at variable-rate lime application and preparing paddocks for faba beans.

Perfect day for a paddock walk near Yass on Friday morning! With CSIRO and South East Local Land Services, TFS hosted a productive morning, visiting the trial plots of an MLA funded program looking at secondary nutrient deficiencies like boron, sulphur and potassium.
Soil test results from across the region last year showed that 50% of granite soils were low in boron - deficiencies can affect plant growth. Whilst tissue testing is the gold standard for diagnosis, this research is showing that the boron soil test is reliable also.
We also visited the serradella plots on the farm, an alternative legume to subclover that performs well on acidic soils. Matt also provided a mini seasonal update for the area. Thanks to everyone who came along.
