There’s lots of ways we can help with reactivity but we first need to understand what drives it.
Do you know a dog who goes from FAST ASLEEP to barking, lunging or charging at the window in seconds? 🤯🐶
That kind of explosive behaviour can sometimes feel completely random, but often there’s much more happening beneath the surface. 🧠✨ The reaction we see may simply be the final moment in a much bigger picture involving stress, hidden triggers and a dog who hasn’t yet learned how to move through that middle ground between totally settled and FULL REACTION. 💥
Here are 3 things to think about when tackling REACTIVITY AT HOME! ⬇️
🪣 Check their stress bucket!
Every dog has an internal ‘stress bucket’ that gets filled by the exciting, worrying, frustrating or even painful experiences they have. So, while the trigger that causes barking might be the final drop that pushes their bucket into overflow, it’s not the whole picture! Zoom out to consider what else may have been building across the dog’s day or week, and how those little drops could be reduced.
📝 Keep a diary!
If the trigger isn’t obvious, ask their owner to start recording what happened in the 20 seconds before each reaction. A neighbour’s door closing, movement outside or another subtle event may begin to appear repeatedly. Once you know the “suspects”, you can start changing what those events predict!
😌 Start small!
Some dogs can accidentally become brilliant at two states: asleep…or reacting. Help them practise the bit in between. Stand up while they’re settled, sit back down, and let them notice the movement before choosing to resettle. The more they rehearse “I noticed that, and I’m okay”, the stronger that pathway can become.
Did any of these surprise you? 🤯
