Why DOES my dog's breath stink?

Bad breath or halitosis is usually a bacteria problem, not a "dog thing".

It's caused by odour-producing compounds called volatile sulphur compounds (or VSCs) released by bacteria in plaque.

By age three, roughly 80% of dogs already show signs of dental disease or are in early stages of dental disease so persistent bad breath is often an early warning sign, not just an inconvenience.

Factors like diet and gut health influence the bacterial balance in the mouth, not just what's stuck on the teeth!

Here are a few simple ways to support fresher breath and healthier teeth:

🪥 Brush their teeth regularly with a dog-safe toothpaste
🥄 Add a dental specific supplement to their food
🦴 Offer size-appropriate raw bones or natural dental chews under supervision
🧸 Use textured chew toys to help mechanically clean the teeth
🥩 Reduce highly processed treats and foods where possible
💧 Keep fresh water available throughout the day
🌿 Support gut health
👩‍⚕️ Book a vet dental check if the smell is strong, sudden or does not improve
