A great afternoon at the local Pony Club yesterday.
Dr Gaskell was invited along to chat with the young riders about horse health, basic vitals and recognising when something may not be quite right.
It was wonderful to spend time with the next generation of horse people and share some practical knowledge. A big thank you to the Pony Club for having us!

๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿด Managing Grazing for Laminitic Horses

Did you know the sugar levels in grass change throughout the day? ๐ŸŒž
Theyโ€™re lowest early in the morning and highest in the afternoon โ€” especially on sunny days.

โฐ Best time to graze: early morning (before 10 am)
๐Ÿšซ Avoid: afternoon or evening grazing when sugars peak

Keeping laminitic or at-risk horses off lush pastures during high-sugar times can make a big difference in prevention and management ๐Ÿ’š

๐Ÿด๐ŸŒฟ Laminitis โ€“ Donโ€™t Wait Until Itโ€™s Too Late!

The last few weeks the weather is warming and we are seeing out first EMS/laminitis cases of the season.

Laminitis is one of the most painful and serious conditions we see in horses. It occurs when inflammation damages the sensitive tissues that connect the hoof wall to the bone inside the hoof.

๐Ÿšจ Early signs to watch for:

Reluctance to move or shifting weight from foot to foot
โ€œRocked backโ€ stance
Warm hooves or increased digital pulses
Short, choppy stride or lameness on hard ground
Lying down more than usual

๐ŸŒพ Common triggers:

Lush spring or autumn grass
Overweight or cresty-necked horses and ponies
Equine metabolic syndrome (EMS) or Cushingโ€™s disease (PPID)
Grain overload or sudden diet changes

โœ… Prevention tips:

Keep weight under control โ€“ you should be able to feel ribs easily
Limit grazing on lush green pasture
Feed low-sugar hay
Regular farrier and veterinary check-ups

If you notice any of these signs or suspect your horse might be at risk, call your vet immediately. Early intervention can make a huge difference in recovery and long-term hoof health.

๐Ÿ’š Donโ€™t wait โ€” laminitis is an emergency.

Pregnancy Scans

Are you breeding your mare this season?

Ideally, we perform a pregnancy ultrasound at day 14 post ovulation to check for an embryo.

This is the time where we also determine if there is one or two embryos. The success rate of mares carrying twin pregnancies is extremely low and often ends in death of 1 or both foals and sometimes even the mare also. We are able to reduce one embryo at this stage and allow the mare to continue on her pregnancy with a single embryo and give her the best chance of success!

A mare presented to us last week with some unusual behaviours including aggression. She was showing lots of interest in her female paddock companions as they were coming into season even trying to mount them. On ultrasound one o***y was much larger than expected and had an abnormal appearance (honeycomb-like) which made our vets suspicious she had a granulosa cell tumour of her o***y.

The mare was referred to hospital where a surgeon operated to remove the o***y & tumour - normally this is attempted through key-hole surgery while the horse remains standing but the tumour was so large, surgeons had to give the horse a general anaesthetic and take the tumour out via her midline. It was a whopping 10kg mass - to put this in perspective - a normal mare o***y should weight between 30-120g.

Granulosa cell tumours are the most common ovarian tumours in horses and can occur at any age. They secrete hormones including testosterone which contribute to signs such as: aggression, striking, mounting and increased muscle mass. Once removed it does take some time for the remaining o***y to develop back to normal size and start cycling again but the hope is that this mare will go on to carry foals in the future.

Lucerne hay provides approximately 10-15g of calcium per kilogram!

It is also a great source of protein & the act of chewing long stem fibres stimulates your horse to secrete more saliva (containing bicarbonate) and helps buffer their stomach acid.

Feeding lucerne hay is an easy way to boost your horse's calcium intake, especially important for young growing horses & for horses on high oxalate pastures (setaria, buffel, kikuyu, green panic & para grasses etc).
