Paws & Reward Helping pets and their people thrive through positive training. My training philosophy begins with kindness to both people and animals. Everyone wins.

Small group classes in Blackwood and Flagstaff Hill, plus personalised in-home consults for dogs and cats, supporting real-life skills and lasting results. No one will be yelled at for not knowing what to do or making mistakes. My focus is on helping you understand what your dog or cat wants and needs, while also equipping your pet with the skills he or she needs to be comfortable and happy in your family. The goal is for you and your pet to enjoy fulfilled and enriched lives together. My training focuses on three areas to achieve behavioural change: management, relationships and training:

- Management: I will set your pet up for success. This involves short and long term strategies, such as crates, gates, exercise, vet visits etc. This helps prevent problems from developing.

- Relationship: refers to the pet-owner relationship being a partnership rather than being viewed as one party dominating another. Think of it as you and your pet being in a dance. As the owners, it is your job to give clear instructions to your dog or cat. This will avoid confusion, which often leads to stress.

- Training: I use positive reinforcement training because research has consistently shown it to be the most effective way to teach an animal the desired behaviours and learn new tasks. Positive reinforcement involves reinforcing desirable behaviours and ignoring, redirecting or preventing undesirable behaviour. This training strategy makes any situation better because it fills in the gaps for your pet on what you want her or him to do instead of what you don't want her or him to do. To do this, we’ll use anything your individual pet would welcome more of (food, toys, attention, petting, etc.). Behaviour you like is matched with things your dog likes. I don’t have a use for choke chains, electric collars or any other equipment that needs the dog to fail in order to serve its purpose of β€œcorrecting.”

🐱 If my cat can have a recall like this, so can your dog! 🐾

Meet Elsie, our Russian Blue, demonstrating her rather enthusiastic recall skills! πŸ˜‚

Elsie was happily relaxing in our bedroom when I called her. Within seconds, she came SPRINTING down the hallway, taking the corner with so much enthusiasm that she almost slid straight into the wall! πŸ™ˆ

The secret? Some very tasty treats from Urban Pet Food and a history of being rewarded when hearing her recall cue!

Believe it or not, I've taught Elsie her recall using the same training principles we teach in our Rapid Recall course. I've just had to make a few adjustments to accommodate the fact that she's a cat and training only happens when SHE decides she's in the mood. 😹

The key is making coming when called something your pet genuinely WANTS to do!

And if I can convince a very independent cat to come racing when called, imagine what you can achieve with your dog! πŸ•

🐍 Snake season is here! Is your dog prepared? 🐾

As the weather warms up, snakes are becoming more active across South Australia. While we know to give snakes plenty of space, our dogs don't necessarily understand the danger!

πŸ’š Here are 5 ways to help keep your dog safe this snake season:

🐍 Keep your backyard tidy. Keep grass short, remove piles of garden debris and avoid leaving materials lying around that could provide shelter for snakes.

🐍 Stick to clear paths. Keep your dog on lead in bushland and avoid long grass, dense vegetation and areas where snakes may be hiding.

🐍 Practise your recall. Being able to call your dog away from something interesting could make all the difference. Build this skill using positive reinforcement and plenty of practice.

🐍 Teach your dog to disengage. Reward your dog for noticing something interesting and choosing to turn away or check in with you instead of investigating.

🐍 Stay vigilant. Snakes can be active at different times of day depending on the weather, so never assume an area is snake-free.

🚨 If you suspect your dog has been bitten by a snake, seek emergency veterinary care immediately! Keep your dog calm and still. Don't wait for symptoms to appear. Keep your dog as calm and still as possible, carry them if you can, and don't attempt to catch or identify the snake. Even if your dog initially seems fine, a suspected snake bite is an emergency.

🌿 Can dogs learn to avoid snakes?

Absolutely! While no training can guarantee complete safety, we can teach dogs skills that may reduce the risk of dangerous encounters.

Our Snake Aware program uses reward-based training to teach dogs that the sight or scent of a snake is their cue to move away, return to their owner and alert them to its presence. 🐍

No shock collars. No punishment. No live snakes. Just practical, positive training designed to help dogs make safer choices. πŸ’š

πŸŽ“πŸΎ Cooperative Care Graduates! πŸΎπŸŽ“

A huge congratulations to our wonderful dogs who graduated from Cooperative Care this week! πŸ’œ

What makes this group particularly special? Every single dog is a Puppy College graduate, and they're all under 12 months old! πŸ₯Ή

Their amazing owners recognise that preparing dogs for a lifetime of grooming and veterinary care starts early. Rather than waiting until nail trims, ear cleaning or vet examinations become stressful, they're investing in teaching their dogs to feel safe, confident and comfortable with handling from a young age.

Throughout the course, these clever pups have been learning that they have a choice, that their communication matters, and that cooperating with care procedures can be a positive experience. 🐢

We absolutely love seeing our Puppy College graduates continue their learning journey, and we're so proud of these owners for being proactive about their dogs' lifelong welfare. πŸ’œ

We missed Bobby at our graduation lesson! 🐾 Although he couldn't join us for the final celebration, he's very much part of this wonderful group of graduates!

🐾 NEW: Assistance Dog Training at Paws & Reward 🐾

We’re very excited to announce the launch of our new Assistance Dog Training Program in Adelaide.

Our program provides individualised, reward-based training for children and adults seeking an assistance dog to support them with:

πŸ’™ Autism
πŸ’š ADHD
πŸ’œ PTSD and other psychiatric conditions

We know that the assistance dog journey can feel overwhelming β€” especially when you’re trying to work out where to begin, whether a particular dog is suitable, or what training is actually required.

That’s why we’ve created several different pathways to meet people wherever they are in their journey:

🐢 Pre-Dog Consultation β€” guidance before choosing a dog, including what to consider when looking at breeds, breeders and individual puppies or dogs.

🐢 Assistance Dog Foundations β€” building the essential skills and behaviours needed for future assistance work.

🐢 Assistance Dog Candidate Assessment β€” assessing whether your current dog may be suitable for assistance work.

🐢 Individualised Assistance Dog Training β€” one-on-one training tailored to the needs of the handler and their dog, including assistance tasks and preparation for public access.

Throughout the program, our focus is on welfare, suitability and real-world reliability. Assistance work isn’t right for every dog, and we believe being thoughtful and realistic about suitability is an important part of supporting both the person and the dog.

If you’re considering an assistance dog for yourself or your child β€” whether you already have a dog or are only just starting to explore your options β€” you can now learn more about our program on the Paws & Reward website. 🐾
