๐Ÿ‘‚๐Ÿพ Ear Infections in Cats & Dogs โ€“ What Every Pet Owner Should Know ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘‚

Ear infections are one of the most common reasons pets visit the vet. While they may start as a minor irritation, untreated ear infections can become extremely painful and may lead to chronic problems or even hearing loss.

Signs Your Pet May Have an Ear Infection

๐Ÿ”น Scratching at the ears
๐Ÿ”น Head shaking or tilting
๐Ÿ”น Red, inflamed ears
๐Ÿ”น An unpleasant odour from the ears
๐Ÿ”น Dark waxy discharge or debris
๐Ÿ”น Sensitivity when the ears are touched
๐Ÿ”น Changes in behaviour, such as irritability or lethargy

Why Do Ear Infections Occur?

There are many possible causes, including:
๐Ÿถ Allergies (a very common cause in dogs)
๐Ÿฑ Ear mites (especially in kittens and young cats)
๐ŸŒฑ Grass seeds or foreign material in the ear canal
๐Ÿฆ  Bacterial or yeast overgrowth
๐Ÿ’ง Excess moisture from swimming or bathing
๐Ÿ“ˆ Hormonal or underlying health conditions

What Should You Do?

โœ… Book a veterinary examination as soon as possible.

It can be tempting to use leftover ear medication or over-the-counter products, but this can sometimes make the problem worse. Different infections require different treatments, and some ear conditions can only be diagnosed with an examination of the ear canal.

Why Early Treatment Matters

The longer an infection is left untreated, the more inflammation develops within the ear canal. Chronic infections can lead to:
โŒ Narrowing of the ear canal
โŒ Ongoing pain and discomfort
โŒ Recurrent infections
โŒ Damage to the eardrum
โŒ Hearing impairment

Prevention Tips

โœ”๏ธ Regular ear checks at home
โœ”๏ธ Prompt treatment of allergies
โœ”๏ธ Dry ears thoroughly after swimming or bathing
โœ”๏ธ Routine veterinary health checks
โœ”๏ธ Seek veterinary advice if you notice any early signs of irritation

Remember, a healthy ear should be clean, comfortable, and free from odour. If your pet is shaking their head, scratching their ears, or seems uncomfortable, don't waitโ€”early treatment is often simpler, more effective, and much more comfortable for your pet.

๐Ÿ“ž If you're concerned about your pet's ears, give our team a call and we'll be happy to help. 03 5428 2805

๐Ÿฉป๐Ÿพ CT Scanning โ€“ Are There Any Size Restrictions? ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿฉป

One of the questions we were asked today was:

"Are there any size restrictions for CT scans?"

The answer is yes. Just like human CT and MRI machines, there are some limitations based on patient size and body shape.

The CT unit itself is incredibly large, but the opening (known as the gantry) has size restrictions that determine which parts of the body can be scanned.

For giant breed dogs (such as Great Danes) and very deep-chested breeds (such as Salukis and Borzois), we are generally unable to perform CT scans of the thorax (chest) or abdomen due to the size of the gantry.

However, this doesn't mean CT imaging isn't an option! On large breeds, we can still scan areas such as:

โœ… Head
โœ… Neck
โœ… Limbs
โœ… Pelvis

Every patient is different, and our veterinary team will be happy to assess your pet and guide you towards the most appropriate imaging option.

Our goal is always to find the best diagnostic pathway for your pet, whether that's CT scanning here at the clinic or other imaging when required.

If you have any questions about CT scanning and whether it may be suitable for your pet, please don't hesitate to chat with our team. ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿพโœจ CT Scanning Has Arrived at Gisborne Veterinary Clinic! โœจ๐Ÿพ

We are thrilled to announce that we are now able to offer CT scanning services locally, meaning many of our patients no longer need to travel across Melbourne to access advanced diagnostic imaging.

Working alongside the amazing team at Insight Mobile Veterinary Diagnostics, we now have access to a state-of-the-art mobile CT unit that can assist with a wide range of diagnostic investigations, helping us provide faster answers and more targeted treatment plans for our patients.

Today's adorable patient, Master C, was an absolute superstar! โญ

Master C required a CT scan to help locate a testicle that had failed to descend. While this can occur in some male puppies and kittens, accurately locating the retained testicle is important as it allows surgical planning and helps prevent potential health complications later in life.

Using CT imaging, we were able to identify the location of the retained testicle and proceed directly to surgery, making the process more efficient and providing the best possible outcome for our little patient.

Common reasons for a CT scan include: (note this does not replace other diagnostics such as xrays and ultrasounds - and a CT may not suit all)

๐Ÿฆด Lameness and orthopaedic injuries
๐Ÿฆท Hidden dental disease
๐Ÿ‘ƒ Chronic sneezing or nasal issues
๐Ÿ‘‚ Ongoing ear infections
๐ŸŽพ Locating retained testicles (cryptorchids)
๐Ÿซ Chest and lung conditions
๐Ÿฉบ Investigating masses or tumours
๐Ÿง  Certain neurological conditions

We're excited to now offer access to CT scanning locally to those who are interested, bringing advanced diagnostics closer to home for our patients and their families. ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿฆทโœจ Mr L's Annual Dental Visit โœจ๐Ÿฆท

Mr L came in this week for his annual dental procedure and was an absolute champion! He had a smooth anaesthetic, a successful dental treatment, and an excellent recovery. โค๏ธ
Such an adorable, sweet little man

While his teeth looked fairly good above the gum line, his dental X-rays told a different story. Just like an iceberg, we only see about one-third of a tooth during a routine examination, with the remaining two-thirds hidden beneath the gums.

Mr L's X-rays revealed issues that could not be seen during a visual inspection alone, allowing us to identify and treat problems before they became more serious and painful.

This is exactly why we include full-mouth dental X-rays with all Stage 1 dental procedures. They help us detect hidden disease, assess tooth roots, and ensure we are providing the most thorough dental care possible for your pet.

Many dental problems occur below the gum line, where they can quietly progress without obvious signs. By taking dental X-rays, we can uncover these "hidden issues" and help keep our patients comfortable, healthy, and pain-free.

Well done, Mr L โ€“ enjoy that fresh, clean smile! ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿพ

โ„๏ธ๐Ÿพ Winter is here โ€” and just like us, our pets feel the cold too!

As the temperatures drop, itโ€™s important to make sure our furry family members stay warm, comfortable and healthy throughout the colder months.

Here are a few winter care reminders for your pets:

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Provide warm, dry bedding away from drafts
๐Ÿฅฃ Keep up good nutrition โ€” some pets may need extra calories in winter
๐Ÿ’ง Always ensure access to fresh water (even in cold weather!)
๐Ÿฆด Older pets and those with arthritis may feel stiffer in winter and may need extra support
๐Ÿงฅ Short-coated or elderly pets may benefit from coats on cold walks
๐Ÿถ Continue regular exercise, even if itโ€™s shorter walks during chilly days
๐Ÿฑ Bring domestic pets indoors during extreme cold, frost or wet weather

Winter is also a great time to keep up with routine health checks, arthritis management and dental care to help your pets stay comfortable and happy.

Stay warm everyone โ€” from all of us and our four-legged helpers ๐Ÿพโค๏ธ
