๐Ÿด GET FOAL READY ๐Ÿด
Itโ€™s foaling time! The most exciting (and stressful) time of year!
Delivering and rearing newborn foals can be a difficult task for any owner and the first few hours are critical!
Consider the rule of 1-2-3
1- The foal should be standing within 1 HOUR
2- The foal should be feeding within 2 HOURS
3- The mare should have passed the placenta within 3 HOURS
An immunity test is also encouraged within 12-24 hours to ensure your foal has consumed enough colostrum to get the best kickstart! (Just like the foal Lucy visited in this photo)

However, consider the 1-2-3s as a GUIDE. If your mare and foal arenโ€™t quite right (lethargic, colicing, laboured breathing) consider phoning sooner!
Early veterinary intervention can make all the different with newborn foals!

The grass is green, fresh and oh-so-tasty. ๐ŸŒฑ
๐Ÿ˜‹ And our horses are HUNGRY.๐Ÿคค
We have been seeing an increasing number of horses going down with founder (or laminitis).
Founder is a painful and debilitating disease that causes inflammation to the junction of the pedal bone and hoof wall. When severe, horses can go down and develop changes to their bones that can be life-threatening.
If your horse is prone to founder (ie. a miniature/pony breed or diagnosed with an endocrine disease like Cushings) x-rays may be needed to assess the severity of the changes in their feet and help with therapeutic farriery. ๐ŸŽ
If your horse has developed sore feet or a reluctance to move, a vet visit may be warranted to make sure it is treated appropriately before it gets worse!
Call Gil Vets today to help get your horse on all 4s! ๐Ÿฅ•

With the temperature warming up and moisture in the ground, our parasites are thriving.
Large and small animals are prone to gastrointestinal worms, fleas, mites and ticks. These can all wreak havoc on your animalโ€™s health.
Ensuring your animals are protected against these parasites helps to ensure they are performing at their best!
Not sure what to use?
Stop by the clinic and ask our friendly staff about the choices for your animals today!

๐ŸŒป YAY SPRING! ๐ŸŒป
The long awaited warm weather has returned! The birds are chirping, the flowers are blooming and the animals are itching. ๐ŸŒท
Just like human hay fever, dogs and cats can develop seasonal allergies.
These can appear as itchy ears, red eyes or sore feet. If left unattended, itchiness can lead to hair loss and infection ๐Ÿฆ .
Has your pet got an itch that canโ€™t be scratched?
Get it sorted at Gil Vets!
