Horse welfare first and foremost

AMT Equestrian Services helps horse owners find more joy and connection with their horse by building a solid foundation for life-long soundness. I offer horsemanship coaching and clinics as well as horse training services and regularly host world renowned clinicians, instructors and other equine professionals. AMT Equestrian is managed by Andrew Turnbull who has a deep love and passion for helping horses get along better with people and helping horse owners become more connected, skillful and understanding with horses. Andrew has a unique skill set to empower horse owners to deepen their relationship with their horse and progress on their horsemanship journey. Each year I ride and train my own horses with world renowned horsemen and women and learn from other professionals to continuously build on my knowledge, skills and awareness. Always searching for better and kinder ways to train, ride and manage my horses, I have gone in search across the world to find trainers, clinicians and practitioners who resonate and teach horsemanship that puts the horse’s welfare first and foremost and builds on the deep connection, trust, softness and feel that represents true mastery in horsemanship. AMT Equestrian’s focus is on working with horses in a holistic way that benefits the horses’ biomechanics and way of motion to build soundness as well as mental, behavioural and emotional well being.

Horses have a wonderful way of keeping us humble.

Just when we think we have mastered something, they remind us that there is still more to learn. Usually while someone else is watching!

Training can be thoughtful and focused without becoming too serious. A good laugh, a supportive group and the freedom to ask questions all help create an environment where people enjoy learning.

Progress does not always arrive with a perfect canter transition or a dramatic before-and-after moment.

Sometimes it looks like a horse standing quietly for a little longer. A rider taking a breath instead of rushing. A difficult exercise becoming slightly easier than it was last week.

Those small changes build trust, confidence and understanding over time.

If you feel stuck or are unsure what to work on next, send us a DM. A fresh set of eyes can make a real difference.

A corner is more than the space between two long sides.

It gives the rider a chance to organise the line, support the outside shoulder and prepare the horse for what comes next. If the corner is rushed or cut off, the next movement often begins without enough balance.

Try riding each corner with a clear plan. Look where you are going, keep the rhythm steady and notice whether the horse follows the line or falls through it.

So incredibly grateful to have Jemimah and Alyssa as part of the AMT team. 🤍🐴

I was asked recently why I do what I do, and it made me think about the fact that AMT has never really just been about training horses or teaching lessons.

A huge part of it is the community we’re creating — having a safe, supportive place where people can come and enjoy their horses, learn, make mistakes, ask questions and continue to grow. A place where we can hopefully educate horses in a way that is ethical, responsible and safe, while helping people become better horsemen and horsewomen along the way.

That’s also why I’m particularly proud to have these two girls here. Jemimah and Alyssa are both genuinely caring, passionate young women who love horses and want to make a life and career out of working with them. Watching them learn, develop their feel, gain experience and grow into the horsewomen they’re becoming is something I’m very proud to be a small part of.

Running a horse business and creating opportunities for people isn’t always the easiest thing financially, but having good people around you — people who care about the horses, the clients and the place — makes it incredibly worthwhile.

Very grateful for both of you, and excited to see where your respective journeys with horses take you. ❤️

Bettina's words 👉**Please don't wait for "next time"**

I want to be honest with you: with the rising conflicts and uncertainty in the world, long-distance travel is not something I can take for granted anymore. I truly hope to keep coming back, but I can't promise that I'll be able to return next year. So if you've been thinking "maybe next time," please use this chance now.

If you haven't already booked head to our website amtequestrian.com.au and search under 'Clinics' - Hope to see you there. Andrew

Coming home to Australia – for the 8th time 🇦🇺

G'day Australia – I'm coming back! 🐴💛

In just a few weeks I'll be packing my bags for Australia, for the 8th time! From mid-October to mid-November I'll be teaching nine clinics, from Perth all the way to Minimbah. On my very first tour, I could never have imagined how dear this country, its horses and its people would become to me. Australia truly has a special place in my heart, and every time I return, it feels a little more like coming home.

What I love most about teaching in Australia is the openness and curiosity I meet there: riders who want the best for their horses and are happy to look closely, ask questions and try something new. A horse softening and letting go, a rider's face lighting up when something finally clicks... these are the moments I travel halfway around the world for.

**Learning together, in person**
We live in a wonderful digital age. I teach online myself, and I love it. But nothing replaces standing next to you and your horse in the arena. At a clinic I can see the small details, feel the atmosphere, and adjust in the moment. And you get something just as precious: a relaxed, positive group of like-minded people, learning from each other's horses, sharing a cup of tea and a good laugh between lessons. There's a theory lecture every day, and spectators are very welcome. Many tell me they learn just as much from watching, and they go home inspired, sometimes with new friends.

**Understanding, not just following**
In the Academic Art of Riding, we start with connection: a horse who feels safe and relaxed. Then we build clear communication through the aids, and only then do we use exercises as gymnastics with a purpose. So we focus on balance and aids rather than just performing exercises. My goal is that you understand *what* you are doing and *why*. You learn to judge your own work, read your horse and make good decisions on your own. In other words, you become independent. Harmony between horses and their humans is not just an advertising slogan for me. I really strive to help humans and horses understand each other better, one lesson at a time.

**Everyone is welcome**
It's important to me to teach with respect for both the human and the horse. We don't filter participants by level, and I value leading training just as much as advanced work. You can work bitless or with a bit, ride in a saddle or in a pad. I simply support you and work with what you already have. Each participant with a horse receives 3 individual lessons, and I'll do my best to send you home with tips and a clear plan to continue.

**For those of you who teach**
If you are a coach yourself, you are very welcome too. I work with clear, teachable steps and a logical progression that you can take home and pass on to your own students.

**Not a one-off event**
It matters a great deal to me to support the growth of gentle dressage in Australia and to help build a real community there. That's why these clinics are not a one-off. Between my visits, I'm here for you with online lessons, and you can keep learning with the theory lectures, training videos and step-by-step explanations in my online Art of Riding Classroom. I will do everything I can to return regularly, so that together we can build a solid education for you and your horse, one step at a time, year after year.

**What's new this year**
We have a new location in northern Victoria. The Sunshine Coast clinic has moved to Brisbane. And in Aldinga and Minimbah you can join two back-to-back clinics.

I'm so grateful to Anke, who organises the whole tour and hosts two clinics herself. I'm also grateful to Andrew, Liz, Sarah & Marina, Judy, Susan and Len for hosting their clinics. Most of them have been part of this since the very first tour!

**Please don't wait for "next time"**
I want to be honest with you: with the rising conflicts and uncertainty in the world, long-distance travel is not something I can take for granted anymore. I truly hope to keep coming back, but I can't promise that I'll be able to return next year. So if you've been thinking "maybe next time," please use this chance now.

Not every useful lesson needs to happen between four arena fences.

Trail riding, cattle work, garrocha, groundwork and working with the mechanical cow can all help develop balance, focus and communication. They also give horses and riders something interesting to think about together.

Sometimes a change of setting is exactly what is needed to make an old idea finally click.

Would you like to try something different with your horse? Send us a DM to ask what options may suit you.

The walk can tell us a great deal before the real work begins.

Is the rhythm even? Is your horse travelling forward freely? Can you guide a turn without the shoulders drifting or the pace changing?

Taking time to notice these details gives both horse and rider a chance to settle into the session. A thoughtful walk is part of the training, not simply the bit before it starts.
