New puppies are adorable bundles of energy, but their growing bodies still need careful support.

While it can be tempting to head straight out for long walks and adventures, too much exercise too early can place unnecessary pressure on developing bones and joints.

A helpful guide for puppy exercise is to keep walks short and manageable, roughly five minutes of exercise for every month of age.

Making sure your puppy is fully vaccinated before social outings is just as important as protecting their physical development.

At North Road Veterinary Centre, our team can help you stay on track with vaccinations and provide a full puppy health check before your little one begins exploring the world 🐶

Did you know that 37% of microchipped animals entering shelters have incorrect data?

Did you know many microchipped pets entering shelters still can’t be reunited with their owners because their details are no longer up to date?

A microchip can only help bring your pet home if the information attached to it is accurate.

Old phone numbers, outdated addresses, or previous owner details are more common than many people realise.

If your pet went missing today, could you be contacted quickly?

Checking your pet’s microchip details only takes a few minutes, but it can make a lifetime of difference.

You can update or check your details through petaddress.com.au, or bring your pet into North Road Veterinary Centre, and our team will happily scan their microchip and help you confirm everything is correct.

Please share this post to help spread the reminder to other pet owners 🐶🐱

Cats are experts at masking pain. It’s part of their instinct, so the signs are often subtle.
As a cat owner, noticing small changes can make a big difference.

Here are 5 signs your cat might not be feeling their best:

1️⃣ Untidy Coat
If grooming has stopped, especially around the back or hips, it may be due to discomfort.
2️⃣ Litter Box Changes
Avoiding the box or missing it could mean it’s painful to climb in.
3️⃣ Hiding More Often
If your social cat is suddenly withdrawn, it may be a sign that something’s not right.
4️⃣ Less Jumping
Avoiding high spots like benches or cat trees can indicate joint pain.
5️⃣ Facial Changes

Squinting, flattened ears, or a withdrawn expression can all signal discomfort.
If your cat seems “off,” it’s worth checking in.

💬 Share this with a fellow cat owner. You might help them spot something important.

Is your older dog slowing down lately? It might be more than just ageing.

As the cooler weather settles in, joint stiffness and discomfort can become more noticeable, especially in senior pets. Subtle signs like hesitation on stairs, changes in mood, or stiffness after rest could point to arthritis.

The good news? There are effective ways to support your dog’s comfort and mobility.

If your dog has a case of the “indoor zoomies,” you don’t need to head out into the cold to burn that energy!
Fun fact: Just 15 minutes of mental stimulation can tire your dog out as much as a long walk!

Here are 3 easy indoor activities to keep them busy:
1️⃣ Muffin Tin Puzzle
Pop treats into a muffin tray and cover them with tennis balls, instant brain game!
2️⃣ Treasure Hunt Time
Hide treats around the house and encourage your dog to “Find it!” Great for using their natural sniffing skills.
3️⃣ Hallway Games
Use a hallway for gentle fetch or “recall runs” between family members.

👇 Which one will you try first? Tell us your dog’s favourite indoor game in the comments!

Autumn often brings an increase in wild mushrooms, especially after rain. While not all are toxic, it’s safest to treat any mushroom ingestion as a potential emergency.
Wild mushrooms can cause a range of symptoms, from vomiting and diarrhoea to tremors, seizures, and even life-threatening illness.

If you suspect your dog has eaten a mushroom, don’t wait for symptoms to appear. Some toxins act slowly, meaning serious damage can occur before your pet seems unwell.

To help reduce the risk:
🍄 Check your garden regularly for mushrooms
🍄 Keep dogs on lead in unfamiliar or bushy areas
🍄 Be extra cautious after rainy weather

If ingestion is suspected, seek veterinary care immediately.
If you can, bring a sample of the mushroom with you, using gloves to handle it safely.
If your dog may have eaten a wild mushroom, contact your vet straight away.

And feel free to share this with fellow dog owners to help keep their pets safe, too.
