Perth Hills Dog Walking I’ve spent over 60 years around dogs — starting at age 11 cleaning boarding kennels for a dollar a weekend, and continuing ever since.

That’s a lifetime of understanding dogs of all types, temperaments, and needs.

ECLIPSE: THE DOG WHO KEPT VISITING HER FAVOURITE PARK

🐶Dogs never cease to amaze us with their intelligence, loyalty and devotion. One remarkable example was Eclipse, a black Labrador–Mastiff mix from Seattle, USA, who became famous for catching a public bus by herself to visit her favourite dog park.

🐶Eclipse's daily adventures began almost by accident. One day, while waiting at a bus stop with her owner, Jeff Young, she became impatient and boarded the bus before he could. Jeff followed on the next bus, only to discover Eclipse happily waiting for him at their usual destination—the local dog park. From then on, travelling alone became part of her daily routine.

🐶Bus drivers quickly got to know their unusual passenger. Eclipse would hop aboard, sit quietly in an empty seat or on the floor, and calmly wait until the bus reached the stop nearest the park. She never caused trouble and seemed to know exactly when it was time to get off. Regular commuters looked forward to seeing her, and many considered her the highlight of their daily journey.

🐶After Jeff passed away, Eclipse continued making the familiar trip on her own. Although she no longer had her beloved owner beside her, she faithfully followed the routine they had shared together. The daily journey to the park became a touching reminder of the bond between a dog and the person she loved. People who recognised her story often described it as both heartwarming and heartbreaking.

🐶At the park, Eclipse greeted other dogs and their owners with her usual friendly personality. She was well known throughout the neighbourhood, and many people kept an eye on her to ensure she stayed safe. Her independence never diminished the affection people felt for her. If anything, her determination to continue the tradition made her even more beloved.

🐶Eclipse became an internet sensation, with news outlets around the world sharing her remarkable story. She showed that dogs can learn routines, recognise landmarks and remember places that hold special meaning. More importantly, she reminded us that dogs form deep emotional bonds and often continue familiar behaviours even after losing someone close to them.

S🐶adly, Eclipse was diagnosed with cancer in 2022 and passed away shortly afterwards. Tributes poured in from across the world as people remembered the gentle dog who simply wanted to ride the bus to her favourite park. Her story continues to inspire dog lovers everywhere, demonstrating the loyalty, resilience and remarkable intelligence that make dogs such treasured companions.

🐶Whether or not dogs experience grief in the same way humans do, stories like Eclipse's remind us that our routines with our pets matter. Every walk, every trip to the park and every shared adventure helps create memories that last a lifetime. Eclipse's daily bus ride became more than just a journey—it became a symbol of the enduring connection between people and their dogs, and a reminder to cherish every moment we spend together.

DOG WALKING IN TURKEY: A NATION THAT LOVES DOGS

🐕Turkey has a unique relationship with dogs. In cities such as Istanbul, dogs are a familiar part of daily life, and dog walking often looks different from what many Australians are used to seeing.

🐕One of the most remarkable features of Turkey is the presence of community dogs. These free-roaming dogs are cared for by local residents, who provide food, water and attention. Many are vaccinated and identified with ear tags. It is common to see people greeting these dogs as they move through their neighbourhoods.

🐕For pet owners, daily walks are an important part of life. Early mornings and evenings are popular times to visit parks, waterfronts and public squares. Dogs enjoy the opportunity to exercise and socialise while owners meet friends and neighbours.

🐕In coastal cities, many dogs accompany their owners on walks beside the sea. The cooler temperatures and open spaces make these outings enjoyable for both people and pets.

🐕Visitors are often surprised by how dog-friendly many Turkish communities are. Water bowls are commonly found outside shops and cafes, particularly during the hot summer months.

🐕Whether it is a family pet on a leash or a well-known community dog greeting familiar faces, dogs are woven into everyday life in Turkey and are often treated as valued members of the neighbourhood.

SENIOR DOGS STILL NEED REGULAR WALKS

🐾Many people assume that once a dog reaches its senior years, all it needs is a comfortable bed and plenty of rest. While older dogs do enjoy their naps, regular walks remain essential for their health and wellbeing.

🐾As dogs age, they naturally lose muscle strength, flexibility, and stamina. Gentle exercise helps maintain mobility, supports healthy weight management, and can reduce stiffness in ageing joints. Even a short daily walk can make a noticeable difference.

🐾Walks also provide valuable mental stimulation. New sights, sounds, smells, and experiences help keep an older dog's mind active and engaged. For many senior dogs, a walk around the neighbourhood is still the highlight of their day.

🐾Regular exercise can improve circulation, support digestive health, and help reduce boredom and anxiety. It also strengthens the bond between dog and owner through shared time and attention. Senior dogs may not be able to walk as far or as fast as they once did, but that doesn't mean they should stop walking altogether. The key is to match the walk to the dog's age, fitness, and comfort level.

🐾Age should never be an excuse for inactivity. A gentle walk, plenty of sniffing opportunities, and time spent outdoors can help an older dog stay healthier, happier, and more connected to the world around them throughout their golden years.

DOG WALKING IN CHINA: A DIFFERENT EXPERIENCE

🐕Dog ownership has grown rapidly in China, especially in major cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. As a result, dog walking has become part of daily life for millions of pet owners.

🐕Walking a dog in China's crowded cities can be quite different from walking one in Australia. Many people live in high-rise apartments, so dogs depend on their daily walks for exercise and stimulation. Parks and open spaces become busy in the early morning and evening as owners head out with their pets.

🐕One unusual sight is the popularity of pet strollers. Small breeds, elderly dogs and puppies are sometimes wheeled to parks before being allowed to walk and explore. This helps keep them safe on busy streets and crowded footpaths.

🐕Fashion is another distinctive feature of dog walking in China. Many owners dress their dogs in colourful jackets and outfits. Some clothing is practical for cold weather, while other outfits are simply for fun and often attract attention from passers-by.

🐕In some neighbourhoods, groups of owners meet each evening, turning a routine walk into a social event. Dogs enjoy exercise and interaction, while owners enjoy conversation and companionship.

🐕Despite these differences, the goal is the same as anywhere else: giving dogs exercise, mental stimulation and quality time with their humans.

Why your dog pulls on the leash.

Have you ever wondered why your dog pulls on the leash and totally ignores you? Most of the time, it's because you've set things up so that it's easy and comfortable for your dog to ignore and disobey you...

You bought one of those harnesses, hoping that it would stop him pulling. But it didn't, did it? He still does what HE wants to do, not what YOU want him to do, which is walk by your side. Now it may be possible to train a dog to walk to heel with a harness - I just don't know how to do it!

Over the years I've trained a Lab, 2 Rotties, 2 Kelpies, a GSD, a Ridgeback and a rescue-"Bitsa". All decent-sized dogs, and all using a slip-collar, often unfortunately called a "choke collar". I taught ALL of my dogs to walk calmly and HAPPILY by my side, in very little time, and not one of them came to any harm. It's easy - you just have to know what you're doing

So, if you'd like YOUR dog to behave on the leash, AND learn how to do it yourself, click the link below to find out my availability, and we'll get together for a chat.

The program is 3 x 45 min sessions alone with your pooch, then 2 x 45 min sessions with you AND your pooch, so I can show YOU too. And all for only $200. Expensive? I don't know- what price peace of mind, actually ENJOYING walking your friend? I've been around dogs for over 60 years, and we both know this - "Good is never cheap and cheap is never any good."

Calvin still can’t believe he hasn’t had anyone apply to adopt him. He is great with other dogs, loves pats and cuddles, is housetrained, travels beautifully in the car and sleeps all through the night on a dog bed or a people bed . He is delightful and would love to have a couple kids or another dog to pay with.

He's in SA but can be transported anywhere.
