🌿 Barley grass season is here, and it's worth keeping an eye on your furry friends.
🌾 Barley Grass: Small Seed, Big Problem! 🐾
Those pesky barley grass seeds may look harmless, but they can burrow into your dog's skin, ears, eyes, and paws, causing pain, infection, and ongoing complications if left untreated.
⚠️ Watch for signs such as:
• Excessive licking or scratching
• Limping
• Head shaking
• Pawing at eyes or ears
• Redness or swelling
✅ Check your dog after every walk, especially their paws, ears, eyes and between their toes.

We often get asked about tetanus protection in horses, and it's easy to see why the terms can be confusing. While both help protect against tetanus, they serve very different purposes.
⚠️ Tetanus is a serious and often fatal disease caused by toxins produced by bacteria commonly found in soil. These bacteria can enter the body through wounds, including wounds so small they may go unnoticed.
💉 TETANUS VACCINE = LONG-TERM PROTECTION
A tetanus vaccine stimulates your horse's immune system to produce its own protective antibodies.
✅ Provides ongoing protection
✅ Requires an initial course and regular boosters
✅ One of the most effective ways to prevent this devastating disease
🩹 TETANUS ANTITOXIN = IMMEDIATE, SHORT-TERM PROTECTION
Tetanus antitoxin is not a vaccine.
Instead, it provides ready-made antibodies that offer rapid but temporary protection when a horse may be at risk.

✅ Used for horses with unknown or inadequate vaccination history following a wound or procedure

👁️EYE INJURIES ARE ALWAYS AN 🚨 EMERGENCY
If there's one thing to take away from this week, it's this:
Eye injuries in horses🐴 , dogs 🐶 , and cats 🐱 should NEVER wait.
Even if it's "just a bit watery,”“they're still eating normally,”and “it’s the weekend.”
Eye injuries can deteriorate incredibly fast.
A small corneal ulcer can progress to a perforation within just 24-48 hours ⏳.
What starts as a simple scratch may result in the loss of an eye, or even more serious complications.
Signs of an eye emergency
: • Squinting or holding the eye closed
• Excessive tearing or discharge
• Cloudiness or a blue-ish haze
• Visible wound on the eye or eyelid
• Swelling around the eye
• Rubbing the eye on legs, furniture, or other objects
• Light sensitivity
If you notice ANY of these signs, contact your veterinarian TODAY. Not tomorrow. Not "let's see how it goes."
When it comes to eyes, a few hours can make all the difference between saving and losing an eye.
