🐾 So, what exactly are we waiting for now?

After Wednesday's progesterone result of 0.87, we know one really important thing:

We’re at the beginning. ❤️

Which was a huge relief.

But now comes the part that probably looks a little strange from the outside…

We wait.
We watch.
And we test again.

A progesterone test isn’t just about confirming that Lani is in season. We’re watching her hormone levels rise so we can work out where she is in her cycle and when the timing is right for breeding.

And that timing matters.

A lot.

It’s not simply a case of noticing she’s in season and introducing her to Manuka. There’s a window we’re trying to identify, and every blood test gives us another little piece of the puzzle.

So what numbers are we actually looking for?

Right now, Lani is sitting at 0.87. As her cycle progresses, we’re watching that number rise.

Once we start seeing progesterone levels up around 28 to 30 and above, that tells us we’re getting into the ovulation stage — and that’s when we do the AI. ❤️

So every number matters because it helps us work out exactly where she is in her cycle, and when that all-important window has arrived.

Because we’ve already followed one of Lani’s previous seasons closely, we have a rough idea of how her progesterone tends to rise. Last time, while we were learning her pattern, we were testing every couple of days.

This time, her first result gives us enough confidence to wait until Wednesday for the next blood test.

But we never assume.

Bodies don’t read calendars, and just because Lani followed one pattern last time doesn’t mean she’ll follow it perfectly again.

So between now and Wednesday, we’re still watching her closely — checking the physical signs, watching any changes in her behaviour, and of course, keeping an eye on our extremely helpful early-warning system…

Manuka. 😂

Although, as we established yesterday, Manuka is possibly the world’s most respectful gentleman and generally doesn’t show much interest in our girls until they are very ready.

He cares far too much to bother a lady before she’s ready. 😂❤️

Very respectful.
Not particularly useful. 😂

And this is one of those parts of breeding that doesn’t photograph quite as beautifully as a basket full of puppies.

It’s waiting.
It’s second-guessing.
Watching numbers.
Planning around work and life.

And knowing that getting the timing right is one of the many responsibilities we carry before a litter even begins.

So our next little milestone is Wednesday.

Another trip to K9 Repro.
Another blood test.
Another number.

And hopefully another step closer. 🤞❤️

We’ll take you with us. 🐾

💙 The one we left behind… 😂

Yesterday evening was the usual end-of-day puppy chaos.

Everyone had been outside playing, the dogs were all running around, and it was time to round the puppies up, bring them back into their indoor pen, settle everyone down and organise dinner.

Eventually we got everybody inside, looked into the pen and thought…

Hang on.

One, two, three, four, five, six…

We appear to be missing a puppy. 😂

So off we went looking for number seven.

And there, sitting quietly outside the gate of the outdoor puppy pen, was our little Light Blue Collar boy. 💙

No grand escape.
No adventure.
No puppy causing havoc somewhere around the property.

Just Blue.

Sitting there ever so patiently like:

“Um… excuse me. I think you’ve forgotten somebody.” 🥺😂

Blue is one of the slightly quieter, more sensitive little souls in this litter, and rather than joining the chaos, apparently his solution was simply to sit politely and wait for one of his humans to realise their mistake and come rescue him.

Enter Jonathan.

He hops off his motorbike looking every bit the tough 12-year-old boy in all his riding gear…

…and approximately three seconds later he’s standing there with this tiny puppy tucked into his arms, giving him the biggest cuddle, completely and utterly smitten. 🥹❤️

There was just something so sweet about the contrast.

All the motorbike gear.
The tough-kid exterior.

And this tiny, slightly worried little puppy absolutely melting him.

Of course, Blue very quickly realised his terrible ordeal of being forgotten for approximately five minutes had worked out rather well…

Because he got carried all the way home and received considerably more cuddles than everybody else. 😂💙

Sometimes it’s the completely unplanned little moments that end up being the sweetest ones.

And judging by these photos…

I’m not entirely sure which one of them rescued the other. ❤️

🐾 Lani’s Journey — The day we knew her season had started…

One thing we really want to do with Lani’s journey is bring you along for the parts of breeding that you don’t always see — not just the exciting announcements, but the responsibility, planning and occasional mild panic happening behind the scenes. 😂❤️

We knew Lani’s season was getting close, which means checking her every day for those first subtle signs. Seasons aren’t quite as considerate as popping themselves neatly into the calendar — they can come earlier or later than expected, and missing those first signs can potentially mean missing the breeding altogether.

And unfortunately, Manuka is absolutely no help whatsoever. 😂
He is possibly the world’s most respectful gentleman and generally doesn’t show much interest in our girls until they are VERY ready.

Lovely manners, Manuka.
Terrible early-warning system. 🤦‍♀️😂

Yesterday, Lani was noticeably swollen and I found the lightest bleeding when checking her.

Cue my immediate thought:

“YES! She’s in season!”

…followed approximately half a second later by:

“Wait. Is she STARTING her season… or have we somehow missed the beginning?” 😳

That’s where progesterone testing comes in.

Something people may not realise is that Mazel Retrievers isn’t our full-time job. It’s one of the businesses we manage alongside everything else, and Daniel also works outside the property during the week — so a lot of the breeding side of things gets carefully fitted around workdays, early mornings and late evenings.

Yesterday was a perfect example.

Daniel left home at 4am to head to work, and Lani went along with him for the day. She had a lovely little day out with Dad, enjoyed being his work companion, and then on their way home they stopped in at our wonderful repro team at K9 Repro Services for her first progesterone blood test.

We’re incredibly grateful for the care they give our girls. Our dogs are always made to feel happy, comfortable and very loved while they’re there — which matters enormously to us. ❤️

Then came the waiting.

Daniel and Lani finally arrived home at around 6:45pm… and we spent the next couple of hours waiting for that result, knowing it would tell us whether we were comfortably at the beginning or suddenly playing catch-up.

At around 8:30pm it finally came through:

0.87. 🎉

Relief.

We’re right at the beginning. ❤️

Because we’ve already followed one of Lani’s previous cycles closely, we have a little more understanding of how her progesterone tends to rise, so rather than blood testing every 2–3 days straight away, her next test will be Wednesday.

Of course, no two seasons are guaranteed to behave exactly the same way, so from here we keep watching, testing and adjusting as Lani tells us what her body is doing.

It’s one tiny snapshot of what goes on behind the scenes of a litter long before there are puppies to cuddle.

And because we’ve invited families to come on this journey with us, we feel that responsibility deeply too. We know there are people already hoping, planning and getting excited alongside us.

So for now…

Lani is officially in season. We haven’t missed it. And the next step is Wednesday’s progesterone test. 🤞❤️

Come along for the ride — we’ll show you what happens next. 🐾

✨ We’re doing something a little different… ✨

One of the things we’ve always loved most about Mazel Retrievers is allowing our families to truly feel part of their puppy’s journey.

We love sharing the little milestones, the updates, the anticipation and all of those special moments that make the wait for a puppy feel so exciting.

But lately, we’ve been thinking…

Why should the journey only start once there are already puppies?

What if we brought you along from the very beginning?

From the moment we begin hoping for that litter ourselves. ❤️

So… Lani came into season yesterday.

And this time, instead of quietly going through the breeding process behind the scenes and only sharing once everything is confirmed, we’re inviting you to come on the whole journey with us.

The science.
The waiting.
The nerves.
The exciting moments.
And sometimes, the disappointing ones too.

Because breeding isn’t always straightforward, and as breeders, we become invested in these litters long before a pregnancy is ever confirmed.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll share what actually happens behind the scenes — from progesterone testing and timing, through to breeding, waiting and hopefully, eventually, puppies.

So for the families already waiting and hoping for one of Lani’s babies…

this is where your puppy’s story may be beginning. 🥹❤️

Welcome to Lani’s Journey.

Day 1: She’s in season.

Next stop… progesterone testing. 🐾

A day filled with happy faces, puppy cuddles and plenty of love! 🥰

Mumma Maggie and Dad Manuka were absolutely loving all the extra cuddles too — because apparently, being a Mazel mum and dad comes with a pretty wonderful perk… lots of human attention! 😍🐶
