π¦ REPTILE KEEPING IS NOT JUST A BUSINESS β ITβS A LIFETIME OF DEDICATION, KNOWLEDGE AND PASSION! π¦
Since opening our new Bayntons Reptiles store in Browns Plains, weβve noticed something thatβs becoming increasingly concerning.
More and more general pet stores and produce stores are suddenly deciding to jump into the reptile industry.
And while we absolutely welcome genuine people who want to contribute positively to this incredible industry, thereβs something that needs to be said.
Just because you can sell a reptile doesnβt mean you understand how to care for one. And just because you can put reptile products on a shelf doesnβt mean you know how to use them correctly.
Reptile keeping is not something you learn overnight. Itβs not something you can simply add to your existing business because youβve noticed another store doing well.
It takes YEARS of experience, dedication, mistakes, learning, research and hands-on understanding to develop the knowledge required to properly care for these animals and educate the people purchasing them.
Let me explain what reptiles mean to us.
My brother and I have spent our entire lives breeding and working with animals. For the past eight or nine years, reptiles have consumed practically every waking moment of our lives.
And when I say every waking moment, I mean it.
24 hours a day. Seven days a week.
Weβve sacrificed holidays, weekends, social lives and just about everything else to build the knowledge, experience and understanding we have today.
There was a time when I literally gave up my own bedroom to house reptiles and slept on the lounge room floor.
Thatβs how much these animals mean to me.
Weβve lived and breathed reptiles for almost a decade. Weβve spent countless hours researching, breeding, raising hatchlings, managing health issues, understanding genetics, perfecting husbandry and learning from every experience along the way.
And you know what?
Weβre STILL learning every single day.
Because thatβs what genuine dedication to this industry looks like. You never stop learning.
So when we see businesses suddenly jumping into reptiles with little apparent experience, it concerns us.
Not because weβre worried about competition.
Weβre worried about the animals and the customers who trust these businesses to give them the right advice.
Reptile keeping is incredibly specialised.
Itβs not just about putting an animal in an enclosure and selling someone a heat lamp.
Itβs about understanding:
* Correct heating, lighting, UVB and temperature gradients.
* Species-specific husbandry and environmental requirements.
* Appropriate substrates, humidity and enclosure design.
* Nutrition, supplementation and feeding requirements.
* Genetics, breeding practices and inherited conditions.
* Disease prevention, parasites, health concerns and warning signs.
* Behaviour, stress, growth and long-term animal welfare.
* Troubleshooting equipment and husbandry problems.
* Providing ongoing support when something goes wrong.
And thatβs only scratching the surface!
Hereβs the part that concerns me the most.
What happens when a customer purchases their very first reptile from a business that doesnβt have the experience to support them?
What happens when that animal stops eating?
What happens when their temperatures are wrong, their lighting is unsuitable or their reptile starts showing signs of illness?
What happens when the customer returns to the store looking for answers?
Who is going to help them?
Because selling the animal is the easy part.
Knowing how to properly care for it, recognising problems and supporting that customer throughout the animalβs life is where the real knowledge and responsibility come in.
A bad first experience can put somebody off keeping reptiles for the rest of their life.
And thatβs heartbreaking, because reptile keeping should be one of the most rewarding experiences a person can have.
SO HEREβS MY MESSAGE TO EVERYONE CONSIDERING BUYING A REPTILE.
Please, do your due diligence.
Research who youβre buying from. Ask questions. Find out how long theyβve been keeping reptiles, what experience they have and whether they genuinely understand the species theyβre selling.
Ask them about heating, lighting, genetics, husbandry and what to do when something goes wrong.
And most importantly, ask yourself whether you feel confident that this business will be able to support you AFTER theyβve taken your money.
Iβm not saying you have to buy from Bayntons Reptiles.
Far from it.
There are some absolutely incredible reptile breeders and dedicated reptile specialists throughout Queensland and Australia who have spent decades developing their knowledge.
I would much rather see somebody purchase from one of those experienced, reputable breeders than from a business that has jumped into reptiles without developing the expertise needed to do it properly.
This isnβt about protecting our sales.
Itβs about protecting the animals, protecting the customers and raising the standards of our industry.
Weβve worked incredibly hard to build Bayntons Reptiles into what it is today. Our new Browns Plains store isnβt the result of somebody seeing an opportunity to make a quick dollar.
Itβs the result of almost a decade of obsession, sacrifice, dedication and an absolute love for these animals.
And our responsibility doesnβt end when a customer walks out the door.
We want to know that the animals we sell are going into suitable environments, that customers understand what theyβre purchasing and that they know where to turn when they need help.
Weβre not perfect. Nobody in this industry is. But we have the experience to understand how much there is to know, and the commitment to keep improving.
To the businesses entering the reptile industry:
If youβre genuinely passionate, willing to learn, prepared to invest in experienced reptile staff and committed to doing things properly, then welcome. The industry needs more people who care.
But if youβre entering this industry simply because youβve seen somebody elseβs success and think thereβs easy money to be made, please understand something.
These are living animals. Not just another product to put on your shelves.
They deserve better than guesswork, and customers deserve better than advice from somebody who doesnβt understand what theyβre selling.
At Bayntons Reptiles, we will continue doing what weβve always done β putting our animals first, educating our customers, sharing our knowledge and working towards a better future for reptile keeping in Australia.
Because at the end of the day, success in this industry shouldnβt just be measured by how many animals or products you sell.
It should be measured by the quality of care you provide, the knowledge you pass on and the success your customers have with the animals they take home.
