🦷 WHAT YOU CAN’T SEE CAN STILL HURT! 🐾

Did you know that a large part of your pet’s tooth is hidden beneath the gumline?

That’s why dental X-rays are such an important part of a routine COHAT (Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment). A visual examination alone can’t tell us everything that’s happening below the gums.

In this case, dental X-rays revealed retained tooth roots that were hidden beneath the gumline. On further examination, these retained roots were contributing to pain and infection in the mouth.

🔎 Dental X-rays allow us to identify:
• Retained tooth roots
• Tooth root abscesses and infection
• Bone loss
• Fractured teeth below the gumline
• Resorptive lesions
• Other abnormalities that may not be visible during examination.

Your pet’s mouth can look relatively normal on the surface while significant disease is hiding underneath.

That’s why a thorough COHAT isn’t just about making the teeth look clean, it’s about finding and treating disease that we can’t see. ❤️

🔥🐱 Fire 🔥🐱

This gorgeous little kitten was in today for desexing with Dr Darcy.

Before every general anaesthetic, we recommend pre-anaesthetic blood testing. These tests help
assess your pet’s overall health, including organ function and red blood cell levels, so we can identify any hidden issues and tailor their anaesthetic plan for the safest possible procedure. While no anaesthetic is ever completely risk-free, pre-GA bloods provide valuable information to help minimise those risks.

Fire’s blood tests revealed marked a very low neutrophil count and mild anaemia (low red blood cells).
Although Fire was bright, happy and had a normal physical examination, these abnormalities wouldn’t have been detected without blood testing.

As a result, we made the decision to postpone Fire’s desexing while we investigate the cause of these results and start appropriate treatment. Fire has gone home with medication and we’ll be repeating blood tests before proceeding with surgery.

💚 Did you know our Best Mates Program members receive FREE pre-anaesthetic blood testing as part of their membership? It’s just one of the many benefits designed to help keep your pet happy and healthy while saving on routine veterinary care.
