Something I saw recently really got me thinking.
A dog walker was standing in an off-leash area, looking at his phone, while the dogs simply stood around him… waiting.
Waiting for something to happen.
Technically, the dogs were out. They were off leash. They were in an area where they could move around.
But were they really having an experience?
In this Drive Time Chit Chat, I talk about the difference between simply taking dogs somewhere and actually taking dogs for a walk.
For me, a walk is so much more than physical exercise.
It’s an opportunity for dogs to move through their environment, sniff, explore, investigate, gather information, make choices and experience the world.
Dogs don't need us to entertain them every second — far from it. But they do need opportunities to engage with their environment.
And sometimes I think we humans need to ask ourselves:
Is this outing actually for the dog… or are we simply ticking the “walked the dog” box?
A meaningful walk isn't about kilometres travelled or how exhausted the dog is when they get home.
It’s about what the dog got to experience along the way.
