Healthy hooves need more than just biotin.

Last week we talked about the importance of nutrition for good hoof quality and why biotin alone isn't the whole picture.

This is where our BioCina Top Hooves comes in.

Developed specifically for horses with brittle, cracked or soft hooves, Top Hooves combines a high concentration of biotin with amino acids such as methionine and lysine, along with taurine, L-carnitine, vitamins and Lapacho bark.

Our exercise suggestion for the weekend 🐴

Six poles are all you need for this one!

There are quite a few ways to ride this set-up. Try different lines through the poles, add circles and changes of direction and pay attention to keeping a steady rhythm and riding your lines accurately.

Start in walk to get familiar with the exercise, then try it in trot, adjusting the pole distances to suit your horse's stride. Depending on your horse's level of training, you can make it easier or more challenging.

Simple to set up but plenty to work on.

Healthy hooves need more than just biotin.

Biotin is probably one of the first things horse owners think of when dealing with brittle, cracked or poor-quality hooves.

And while biotin plays an important role in hoof health, it isn't the only nutrient involved.

The hoof wall is largely made up of keratin, a protein that needs amino acids for its formation. Methionine, for example, is a sulphur-containing amino acid that plays an important role in the structure of hoof horn.

Other nutrients, including zinc and copper, are also involved in producing healthy hoof horn.

One thing worth remembering is that hooves grow slowly. Even when nutritional deficiencies are corrected, it can take months before improvements become noticeable as new horn grows down.

Good hoof quality really does start from within but nutrition is only one part of the picture. Regular trimming, correct hoof balance and the conditions horses live in are just as important.

Does your horse struggle with brittle, cracked or soft hooves?

Some horses seem to have constant problems with their feet. The hoof wall keeps chipping away, cracks appear or the horn is simply too soft.

And despite regular trimming and good hoof care, the problems keep coming back.

There can be several reasons for poor hoof quality and it's not always something that can be fixed from the outside. Nutrition plays an important part too, as the hoof needs the right nutrients to grow strong, healthy horn.

W**d or valuable herb? 🙂

Stinging nettle is a traditional healing herb for humans and animals alike. It is best known for its diuretic properties, but there is much more to this plant.

It contains vitamins C and E, iron, minerals and trace minerals.

In nature horses tend to avoid stinging nettles and for good reason! Contact with the fresh plant hurts their sensitive nostrils and lips. But this doesn't necessarily mean nettles wouldn't be a valuable addition to their diet. We just need to prepare them first.

How to prepare stinging nettles for your horse:

The best way is to cut and dry the fresh plant (use gloves!!).

Cut the stems and run your gloved hand along them from bottom to top to remove most of the stinging parts. Then tie them in bunches and hang them in a well-ventilated, shady spot to dry.

Once dried, they can be stored in cotton bags. Knead the bag thoroughly and remove the stems before feeding.

Traditionally, dried nettles have been used to support the urinary tract and healthy skin and coat.

Stinging nettle can also be used externally as a rinse. Be careful with grey horses though, as it may leave a yellowish-green tint in their coat!

And if you don't want to feed it to your horse, stinging nettle also makes a wonderful natural fertiliser for the garden. 🙂

Does your horse tend to get puffy legs when travelling?

We received this feedback from Trish, who used our BioCina Herbal Liniment when travelling to the North Island Endurance Championships.

Her horse normally gets swollen legs during long trips or when standing in yards, as he's used to living in a 20-acre paddock.

Before leaving, she applied the liniment and bandaged his legs. They travelled over 400 km on the first day and another 150 km the following morning.

Despite the long journey, Trish reported no swelling when she removed the bandages. She continued applying the liniment once a day over the following days, with no signs of his usual puffy legs.

One of the nicest things you can add to a paddock is a big pile of clean, soft sand 🙂

A place to roll, dig, climb and just have a bit of fun.

If your horses have already created their own bare patches for rolling or lying down, giving them a designated sandy spot may also help save the rest of the paddock from getting dug up.

Such a simple addition but one most horses seem to absolutely love 🙂

One to try this weekend 🙂
A simple set-up with just a few poles, cavaletti or small jumps but there’s plenty you can do with it.
The main thing is to keep the rhythm and bend and ride your lines accurately. Stay soft with your hands and use your seat and legs to guide rather than relying too much on the reins.
It’s a good exercise for horses that tend to rush and just as useful for us riders to work on our own body control and softer aids.
