Your cat experiences your home very differently to you. 🐱👃

We tend to notice what we can see.

But for cats, scent and chemical information are an incredibly important part of understanding their world.

Cats even have a specialised sensory system—the vomeronasal system—that helps them detect chemical information and plays an important role in communication between cats. 

So while you might say:

“I see my house differently to you.”

Your cat might say:

“I smell my house differently to you.” 😹

And this matters for welfare.

When we begin thinking about our homes through our cat’s sensory experience—not simply our own—we can better understand their behaviour, communication and needs.

Did you know your cat has a second system for detecting scents? 🐱👃

The vomeronasal organ, or Jacobson’s organ, helps cats detect important chemical and social signals in their environment.

And this reminds us of something important…

Scent matters enormously to cats.

That litter tray that smells “not too bad” to you may be a very different sensory experience for your cat.

One of the simplest things you can do for your cat’s comfort and welfare?

… Scoop litter trays at least twice a day.

Small change. Big difference. ❤️🐾
