Repairing a Growth Plate Injury
Not every day at Eltham Vets looks the same. 🐾
In this reel, Dr Steve takes us behind the scenes of a growth plate injury in a young dog — where a piece of bone has separated from the growth plate just below the knee.
The goal of the surgery is to carefully reattach the piece of bone and give this young patient the best chance of getting back to a normal, active life.
Young dogs can heal remarkably quickly, and while this particular case presented some additional challenges, Dr Steve was confident that the outlook was very positive.
With decades of experience and a hands-on approach to veterinary care, Dr Steve is still right there in the operating theatre, doing what he does best.

Ragdolls are known for their gentle, affectionate personalities and their love of being around their humans. They’re often happy to follow you around the house, supervise from the couch and generally make themselves part of whatever you’re doing!

But every Ragdoll has their own little quirks…

🐍 WHAT HAPPENS IF YOUR DOG IS BITTEN BY A SNAKE?

A snake bite can be a frightening experience for any dog owner — and sometimes you may not even see the bite happen.

In this second Campfire Chat with Dr Gus, he explains what can happen after a snake bite, why getting your dog to the vet quickly is so important, and how we assess and treat suspected snake bites at Eltham Vets.

Treatment can involve testing, intravenous fluids, medication and antivenom, with some dogs requiring hospitalisation and ongoing monitoring. The earlier treatment begins, the better the chance of a positive outcome.

And importantly, don't wait to see if symptoms develop. If you see a snake near your dog and there's a possibility they may have been bitten, contact Eltham Vets and bring them in as soon as possible:

Ever wondered what happens to those little vials of blood after your pet has a blood test?

Here’s Head Veterinary Nurse Nicki checking recently tested samples as part of our in-house pathology service.

Having pathology testing available here at the clinic means our veterinary team can investigate important things like blood cell counts, organ function and other indicators of your pet’s health — without always needing to send samples away.

It’s one of the many things happening behind the scenes that helps our vets get a clearer picture of what’s going on with your pet and make informed decisions about their care. ❤️

And yes… there’s a lot more to veterinary nursing than cuddling puppies! 😉

Want to give your puppy the best start in life? Our Puppy Preschool at Eltham Vet combines socialisation and obedience to build a strong foundation for a lifetime of good behaviour, confidence and companionship❤️🐶

🤔Who can join?
Puppies aged 8–16 weeks who have received their first vaccination and have been wormed.

🎓 And because every little graduate deserves to celebrate, puppies who complete the course receive a special graduation pack, including a bandana and goodies! 🥳
