There is something special about a cold winter morning and watching these beautiful animals move.

However, with the wet weather setting in, this is a small reminder for upcoming appointments.

Where possible, we really appreciate horses having mud-free legs and hooves before their assessment. It helps us examine them properly, palpate more accurately, assess the feet, and prepare safely if imaging or injections are required.

If heavy rain is forecast, please also think ahead about how this may affect the work-up, especially if there is no undercover area available. For gait assessments, we ideally need a safe, suitable surface where we can assess the horse in-hand and on the lunge.

Patient of the Week: Seamus

This one feels really special.

When we first met Seamus nearly 12 months ago, he was a sore and unhappy horse. After multiple treatments and diagnostics his owner came to us looking for answers. We were able to make a diagnosis, put a plan in place to help him.

Seeing him now is incredibly rewarding. Seamus is a much happier horse, more comfortable in his work, and now out competing at a higher level in both showjumping and dressage.

Stories like this are such a good reminder that a diagnosis is not always the end of the story. With the right plan, the right treatment, and the right support at home, horses can improve so much.

A huge part of Seamus’ progress comes down to the dedication of his owner. Her consistency, care, and commitment to his rehab and ongoing management have played such an important role in this outcome. It is always a team effort, and Seamus is such a lovely example of that.

We are so proud of how far he has come.

Cervical spine issues are one of the most commonly missed causes of poor performance, resistance and discomfort, and they can be really hard to visualise without seeing the anatomy up close.

The goal of every consultation is that you leave knowing exactly what's going on, where the problem is, and why it matters for your horse.

Soft. Supple. Functional.

This is what healthy neck muscles should feel like, even in a horse in medium level work 5 days a week.

A good range of motion should feel easy and comfortable, with the neck able to bend, lift, lower and turn without bracing or resistance.

Excessive tension, firmness, or restriction is often a sign of stress, compensation or strain, rather than strength.

Canter quality is influenced by balance, coordination, strength, spinal function, hindlimb loading, and overall comfort through the body.

In some horses, recurring lead changes or difficulty maintaining a lead may indicate that further assessment is worthwhile, particularly if the issue is new, progressive, or associated with other performance changes.

Training, rider influence, saddle fit, strength, and musculoskeletal health can all contribute, which is why whole-horse assessment is important.

Prepurchase examinations are designed to help buyers better understand the horse they are purchasing.
They are not about “passing” or “failing” a horse, but rather assessing findings that may influence suitability, future management, performance expectations, or ongoing care.

During a prepurchase examination, veterinarians assess far more than obvious lameness alone, including movement, overall health, previous injuries or changes, and suitability for intended use.
