On Tuesday, we treated a patient who had ingested 2x rat bait bags found on the ground in Potts Point.

Thankfully, the owner’s quick thinking and prompt arrival at the clinic enabled us to act while the bait was still in the stomach. We were able to induce vomiting and successfully retrieve the rat bait bags before they could be further digested or absorbed.

The patient remained bright and well following emesis ; however, follow-up blood testing is still recommended after suspected rat bait ingestion to monitor for any delayed effects. This patient returned for blood testing 48-72 hours later, with results showing all measured parameters remained within normal ranges, suggesting no ongoing concerns.

Rat bait poisoning can be life-threatening for pets, and clinical signs are often not apparent straight away. If you think your pet may have ingested rat bait or any other toxic substance, contact your veterinarian or an emergency veterinary hospital immediately, even if they seem completely normal.

Please stay alert during walks and help keep our pets safe by reporting any bait or hazardous items left in public spaces.
💚🐾 A timely reminder that when it comes to potential poisonings, quick action can make all the difference.
