🐾 MUST KNOW MONDAY — HOT SPOTS! 🔴

Have you noticed your pet constantly scratching, licking or chewing at one spot? It could be a hot spot! 🐶

Hot spots are red, inflamed and often moist or weeping skin lesions that can be extremely itchy and painful. They can develop and spread rapidly, sometimes within just a few hours!

🌡️ What causes hot spots?
Common triggers include:
🐾 Fleas and other parasites
🐾 Allergies and skin irritation
🐾 Ear infections
🐾 Moisture trapped in the coat after swimming or bathing
🐾 Excessive licking, chewing or scratching

🔎 What should you look for?
• Red, irritated or raw skin
• Hair loss around the affected area
• Wet, weeping or crusty sores
• Excessive scratching, licking or chewing

❤️ How can you help?
Early treatment is important! Hot spots can worsen quickly and become increasingly uncomfortable. If you notice a suspicious sore, contact your vet promptly. Treatment may include clipping and cleaning the affected area, medication to relieve discomfort and inflammation, and addressing the underlying cause.
In the meantime, try to prevent your dog from licking or scratching the area, and avoid applying human creams or medications unless advised by your vet.

🐕 Remember: Keeping up with flea prevention, grooming regularly and thoroughly drying your dog after swimming or bathing can help reduce the risk of hot spots.

We are once again on call this weekend for all animal emergencies.

Please call our clinic for urgent care if your pet is experiencing:

Difficulty breathing
Difficulty urinating
Collapse or seizures
Severe bleeding
An eye injury
Ingestion of poisons or toxins
Trauma, including bite wounds or being hit by a car
Persistent vomiting or diarrhoea

For non-emergency needs, please contact us during our regular business hours.

If you’re new to the Fraser Coast or weren’t already aware, paralysis ticks are extremely common in our region — and unfortunately, we are currently experiencing a severe influx of tick paralysis cases.

At the moment, we are typically seeing 1–2 dogs and cats affected by tick paralysis every single day. 💔

Paralysis ticks can be extremely dangerous and, without prompt veterinary treatment, can be life-threatening.

🕷️ Prevention is key!
The best thing you can do as a pet parent is make sure your fur baby is consistently protected with an effective tick preventative.
Depending on the product, options can include:
🐾 Monthly chews
🐾 3–6 monthly spot-ons
Regular tick prevention can significantly reduce the risk of your pet becoming paralysed by a paralysis tick.

⚠️ Please don’t wait until you find a tick on your pet to start prevention. Regular protection is essential, particularly during periods of high tick activity.
