🎓 Speaker Spotlight | Dr Peta Hitchens & Dr Paula Menzies

The ANZCVS Equine Chapter is delighted to welcome Dr Peta Hitchens and Dr Paula Menzies as speakers at Bain Fallon 2026.

📊 Dr Peta Hitchens

Dr Peta Hitchens is the Director of the Equine Orthopaedic Research Group at the University of Melbourne Veterinary School, where she combines veterinary and medical epidemiology expertise with extensive experience working alongside the racing industry.

Her PhD at the Menzies Institute for Medical Research was the first to identify key risk factors for jockey injury, highlighting the relationship between serious jockey injuries and falls from horses that had sustained fatal injuries. Dr Peta went on to complete postdoctoral work with the California Horse Racing Board, the UC Davis Racing Safety Program, and later contributed to Racing Victoria, the Victorian State Government and the University of Melbourne Equine Limb Injury Prevention Program.

With over 85 peer-reviewed publications, Dr Peta’s work is focused on developing evidence-based strategies to improve the health, safety, and welfare of both horses and the people who work with them.

💉 Dr Paula Menzies

Dr Paula Menzies graduated from La Plata University in Argentina in 1994. She went on to complete her Diploma at the European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia (ECVAA) and earned her Dr.med.vet at the University of Bern in 2005. In 2012, she completed her PhD thesis at the same university.

In 2024, Dr Paula Menzies was appointed Professor in Small Animal Anaesthesia at the University of Melbourne.

Dr Menzies is internationally recognised for her expertise in veterinary anaesthesia and analgesia, with a strong focus on perioperative patient safety and advanced anaesthetic techniques across veterinary species.

Together, Dr Peta Hitchens and Dr Paula Menzies bring expertise spanning equine epidemiology, racing safety, anaesthesia, and perioperative medicine—offering a unique blend of population-level insight and clinical depth.

The ANZCVS Equine Chapter is delighted to welcome both Dr Darien Feary and Dr Steven Zedler as speakers at Bain Fallon 2026.

🐴 Dr Darien Feary

Dr Darien Feary is an equine medicine and emergency and critical care clinician at REC Equine Specialists in Sydney.

After completing residencies in both Large Animal Internal Medicine and Equine Emergency and Critical Care in the United States, Dr Darien has worked across university teaching hospitals and private referral practices in both the USA and Australia.

She has a strong passion for complex medical cases, critically ill horses and foals, and clinical education and residency training, bringing a practical and highly clinical approach to equine emergency and internal medicine.

🔧 Dr Steven Zedler

Dr Steven Zedler is an Associate Professor at The University of Queensland and an internationally recognised equine surgeon.

A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Dr Steven completed an internship at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital followed by a residency in Large Animal Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania, where he remained on staff as a lecturer before relocating to Australia.

Since joining the University of Queensland Equine Hospital in Gatton in 2010, Dr Steven has developed a strong reputation in complex orthopaedic and spinal surgery. His clinical and research interests include the development of novel orthopaedic implants and surgical techniques, spinal surgery, and CT-guided surgical procedures. He is also passionate about surgical education and has developed innovative training models for veterinary students and surgeons.

Together, Dr Darien and Dr Steven bring expertise spanning equine internal medicine, emergency and critical care, orthopaedics, and advanced surgery—offering invaluable insights for equine practitioners.

🎓 Speaker Spotlight | Dr Travis Tull

The ANZCVS Equine Chapter is delighted to welcome Dr Travis Tull (USA) as one of our international keynote speakers at Bain Fallon 2026.

A graduate of the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr Travis completed both his internship and surgical residency at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital before going on to work as a surgeon at Brown Equine Hospital in Pennsylvania and later as a surgeon and hospital clinician at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Saratoga.

Dr Travis is highly regarded for his expertise in equine surgery and performance horse medicine, with particular interests in orthopaedics, soft tissue surgery, and lameness. His extensive clinical experience managing a wide variety of surgical and lameness cases has made him a sought-after speaker and educator.

🎓 Speaker Spotlight | Dr François-René Bertin

The ANZCVS Equine Chapter is delighted to welcome Dr François-René Bertin (USA) as one of our international keynote speakers at Bain Fallon 2026.

A diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM), Dr François-René is internationally recognised as a leader in equine endocrinology and laminitis research. His career has spanned France, the United States, Canada and Australia, including leading the Equine Endocrinology Research Group at The University of Queensland and, most recently, becoming the inaugural Director of the Nancy Fair Link Laminitis Research Center at Mississippi State University.

Dr François-René has authored numerous scientific publications, book chapters, and the first textbook dedicated to equine endocrinopathies. He also serves on international expert panels responsible for developing guidelines for the diagnosis and management of equine metabolic syndrome, insulin dysregulation, pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID), and other endocrine disorders.
