Yesterday our team was proud to attend the community day with Stay Foundation at Windale! ๐Ÿพ

It was a fantastic day giving back to the community, with an amazing turnout from local pet owners.

Dr Andrew and Dr Lee ran the cat station with the help from Nurse Olivia, where they vaccinated 22 cats and provided preventative healthcare advice and treatments to help keep pets happy and healthy. Overall, the day saw 39 dogs and 22 cats receive care and vaccinations.

A big thank you to everyone involved in making the day such a success โ€” we love being able to support our community and help care for the pets who need it most. ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ

๐Ÿถ ANXIETY IN DOGS โ€” MORE COMMON THAN YOU THINK ๐Ÿพ

Many dogs experience anxiety, and itโ€™s often linked to the busy, noisy world we live in. Sometimes anxiety can stem from a dogโ€™s upbringing, lack of early socialisation, past experiences, or even genetics.

Common signs of anxiety or fear in dogs can include:
โ–ช๏ธ Barking excessively
โ–ช๏ธ Shaking or trembling
โ–ช๏ธ Pacing or restlessness
โ–ช๏ธ Panting or drooling
โ–ช๏ธ Scratching or excessive licking
โ–ช๏ธ Chewing or destructive behaviour
โ–ช๏ธ Toileting indoors

Some common triggers include:
โšก Loud noises like thunderstorms or fireworks
๐Ÿ  Being left home alone
๐Ÿ‘ถ Changes at home such as a new baby or pet
๐Ÿš— Car rides
๐Ÿ‘ฅ Visitors
๐Ÿฉบ Vet visits
๐Ÿ• Lack of socialisation as a puppy

Older dogs can also become anxious due to age-related changes affecting memory and awareness.

๐Ÿ’™ So how can you help?

โœ”๏ธ Create a safe, quiet space at home
โœ”๏ธ Maintain regular exercise and enrichment activities
โœ”๏ธ Spend quality time together to strengthen your bond
โœ”๏ธ Use positive reinforcement and confidence-building training
โœ”๏ธ Speak with your vet to rule out underlying medical causes such as pain or illness

Early socialisation and positive experiences can make a huge difference in helping dogs grow into calm, confident companions.

๐Ÿฑ HOW TO SPOT SIGNS OF ANXIETY AND STRESS IN YOUR CAT ๐Ÿฑ

If your cat has stopped eating, is behaving aggressively, hiding more than usual, or spraying indoors, they could be experiencing stress or anxiety.

โš ๏ธ Common physical signs of anxiety in cats include:
โ€ข Trembling or shaking
โ€ข Rapid breathing
โ€ข Dilated pupils
โ€ข Excessive vocalisation (growling, hissing, yowling)
โ€ข Ears flattened against the head
โ€ข Over grooming causing bald patches or sores
โ€ข Vomiting or diarrhoea
โ€ข Sleeping more than usual
โ€ข Weight loss or gain
โ€ข Eating non-food items like plastic or wool

โš ๏ธ Behavioural signs may include:
โ€ข Toileting outside the litter tray
โ€ข Urine spraying indoors
โ€ข Excessive scratching of furniture
โ€ข Aggression towards people or other pets
โ€ข Constant meowing or pacing
โ€ข Being easily startled by noises or movement

๐Ÿ’ญ WHY MIGHT YOUR CAT BE ANXIOUS?

Cats thrive on routine and familiar surroundings. Stress can be triggered by:
๐Ÿ  Moving house or renovations
๐Ÿถ Introducing a new pet
๐Ÿ‘ถ A new baby in the home
๐Ÿฑ Neighbourhood cats entering their territory
๐Ÿ›๏ธ Lack of safe spaces or resources

Remember โ€” cats prefer separate areas for food, water, litter trays, and resting spaces. They also appreciate quiet retreats and elevated perches where they can feel safe.

๐Ÿ’™ HOW YOU CAN HELP

โœ”๏ธ Keep routines consistent
โœ”๏ธ Provide safe hiding and resting spots
โœ”๏ธ Ensure litter trays are clean and accessible
โœ”๏ธ Spend regular quiet time playing or bonding
โœ”๏ธ Use calming aids such as FELIWAY diffusers

Most importantly, if your catโ€™s behaviour changes suddenly or anxiety signs persist, itโ€™s always best to rule out underlying medical conditions with a veterinary check-up.

๐Ÿ“ž Concerned about your catโ€™s behaviour? Contact our team on 02 4958 6635 โ€” weโ€™re here to help keep your feline family members happy, healthy, and stress-free.
