Cats need parasite protection too, even indoor ones. Fleas hitch rides inside, and along Australia's east coast, deadly paralysis ticks are most active in spring. 🐱

Use a cat-specific product year-round, and never use dog flea treatments on cats, as some contain permethrin, which is highly toxic to them. ⚠️

Cats who roam in tick areas benefit from daily tick checks around the head and neck. Ask us which product best suits your cat's lifestyle. 🛡️

Spring means grass seeds, and these arrow-shaped seeds are experts at burrowing into paws, ears, eyes, and skin, sometimes travelling deep into the body. 🌾

To reduce the risk, avoid long dry grass on walks, keep your lawn mown, and clip the fur around your dog's paws and ears. Check your pet thoroughly after outdoor adventures, especially between the toes. 🐾

Sudden head shaking, paw licking, or a weeping lump warrants a prompt vet visit. ⚠️

Weird symptom spotlight: nystagmus 👀

Nystagmus is an involuntary, rhythmic flicking eye motion which can occur in pets with issues affecting their internal balance systems. 🧠

Common acquired causes include:

• Middle or inner ear infections
• Idiopathic vestibular disease: a condition that can occur suddenly in senior pets
• Brain conditions such as strokes, infections, inflammation or masses
• Head trauma

However, breeds such as Siamese and Himalayan cats can be born with long-term pendular nystagmus, a benign condition which doesn’t generally affect their vision or general health.

If your pet ever shows any sudden eye changes, it’s always safest to have our vets promptly take a look! ⚠️

“Can’t I just leave my pet’s diseased teeth to fall out on their own?”

We recommend against this for the following reasons:

⚠️ Pain – periodontal disease can be very painful, and it can take months to years before an affected tooth becomes loose enough to fall out

⚠️ Infection – periodontal disease involves infection, which can affect the health of your pet’s other vital organs and can also lead to painful tooth root abscesses necessitating emergency treatment

⚠️ The Yuck Factor – having a pet with super stinky breath is unpleasant for human family members, and can pose a significant health risk for immunocompromised owners too

For an assessment of your pet’s dental health, book a consultation with one of our vigilant vets.

Here are three reasons why you shouldn’t worry about your pet if they require dental extractions:

🦷 We use various forms of pain relief prior to, during, and after the dental procedure to ensure minimal discomfort is felt by your pet

🦷 We only remove teeth if we think they are too diseased to save – so in general, pets will actually be more comfortable when these problematic teeth are out!

🦷 Your pet will still be able to eat a standard canine or feline diet, even with multiple teeth removed

To help keep our team safe, we kindly ask our clients to observe the following guidelines. Our aim is to help your pet in a safe, calm, and compassionate way, and your help with this is very much appreciated.
• Please inform us of any history of aggression, fear, or discomfort your pet may experience.
• Ensure your pet is on a leash or in a carrier at all times.
• If your pet has a history of aggression, we may require a muzzle before any procedures.
• Please call ahead if your pet requires sedation or calming options – we will often need to dispense these to you to administer in advance of your scheduled appointment.
• Trust our judgment. If our team advises stopping or altering a procedure, this decision is always made in the best interests of your pet and the people caring for them.
• Thank you for helping keep our team safe.

While minimally processed foods can certainly have health benefits, raw chicken is one unprocessed food that can hold more risks than advantages.

Unfortunately, raw chicken:

⚠️ Is frequently contaminated with harmful bacteria such as Salmonella or Campylobacter, which can pose health risks to both pets and people (particularly those who are pregnant or immunocompromised)

⚠️ Is a significant risk factor for a rapid-onset paralysis condition in dogs known as Acute Polyradiculoneuritis or Coonhound paralysis (which can look similar to tick paralysis)

In November I'll be taking part in the 7-7 Run For Ahlia.

The 7-7 Run for Ahlia is a fundraising running challenge in honour of Ahlia Williams, who passed from the deadliest form of childhood cancer, DIPG, at just 7 years old.

I'll be running to help raise vital funds for RUN DIPG to support world-leading research into better treatments for children diagnosed with DIPG/DMG.

I am trying to fundraise $500 to help RUN DIPG. Please help me by making a donation through my page:
https://rundipg-org.grassrootz.com/7-to-7-run-for-ahlia/braden-collins

The 7-7 Ultra is the ultimate endurance challenge, designed to push runners physically and mentally further with every passing hour. Inspired by the popular backyard ultra format, this event adds a unique twist: the distance increases by 500 metres every hour.

The challenge begins at 7:00am with a 5km course starting and finishing at the Bunbury Runners Club. One hour later, runners tackle the same 5km course plus one 500m lap of the oval. At 9:00am, it's the 5km course plus two laps of the oval. Then another lap is added every hour.

As the day unfolds, so does the challenge.

Each start line becomes a test of determination, pacing, nutrition and resilience. The distances steadily grow, fatigue begins to build, and runners must decide whether they have what it takes to answer the bell for another hour.

The final challenge starts at 7:00pm: the 5km course plus 12 laps of the oval. By then, participants will have covered over 100km and conquered a full day of running.

It only takes a minute and any money you can give (no matter how large or small) will go a long way to helping me reach my target.
Thank you, I really appreciate your support.
Braden.

Do you know how to quickly check your dog’s dental health?

Flip the lip!

Rating this dog’s dental health:

🦷 Uniformly salmon-pink gums along the gum-tooth margin, with no redness, swelling or recession of the edges (only some normal black speckly pigmentation) = great!

🦷 A comfortable mouth, with no significant unpleasant odour (you’ll have to trust us on this one!) = great!

🦷 Early calculus accumulation in the green circled areas = dental cleaning is ideally recommended to reverse this early disease and restore the mouth to perfect health!
