⁉️ What is PU/PD?

PU/PD stands for Polyuria (PU) and Polydipsia (PD) simply meaning increased urination and increased thirst.

🐱🐶 While you will notice your cat or dog drink more on a hot day, after exercise or play, persistent changes in drinking or toileting habits should always be investigated. 🐱🐶

Increased thirst and urination can be associated with a number of conditions including;

🫘 Kidney disease
💉 Diabetes mellitus
💧Urinary tract disease or infection
🧪 Liver disease
🧬 Hormonal changes such as Cushings or Addisons disease
💊 Certain medications

⁉️ What should you do if you notice your pet is emptying the water bowl more frequently, asking to go to the toilet more often, having accidents in the house or producing larger amounts of urine?

✅ Keep track of how much your pet is drinking over a 24 hour period this can provide your Vet with really useful Information
✅ If possible collect a urine sample in a clean container and bring this along with you to your vet appointment.

❤️ Changes in thirst and urination aren’t simply put down to getting older, it can be an important early sign something is not quite right ❤️

Meet the amazing Nurse Alanah

Originally from Adelaide where she completed her Cert IV in Vet Nursing, Alanah has been living in the territory for the last 3.5 years and now calls Darwin home.

After 10 years in the industry she has worked across GP and emergency hospitals as well as orthopaedic and specialist surgical nursing. She has a special interest in emergency nursing and triage. She has recently spent 6 months nursing throughout indigenous communities within the NT and WA.

If she’s not working, she’s playing drums in a local band, camping or DJing events across Darwin. She has a naughty little tuxedo cat called Slink who keeps her busy at home.

🐾 PANCREATITIS IN PETS🐾

Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas and can range from mild to a serious, life threatening illness. The good news is that there are steps pet owners can take to help reduce the risk

⁉️Common signs to look out for:
• Vomiting or nausea
• Reduced or no appetite
• Abdominal pain or a hunched/prayer-like posture
• Lethargy or weakness
• Diarrhoea
• Dehydration
• Sometimes increased thirst

🍖 How can you help prevent pancreatitis?
✅ Avoid fatty foods, fatty table scraps and rich foods can trigger pancreatitis in some pets.
✅ Be careful with treats and keep treats appropriate and give them in moderation.
✅ Avoid sudden diet changes introduce new foods gradually where possible.
✅ Maintain a healthy weight obesity can increase the risk of pancreatitis and other health problems.
✅ Keep rubbish and human food out of reach, pets are experts at finding things they shouldn't eat! 🐕😂
✅ Never give your pet foods that are toxic to them, such as chocolate, onions, garlic or foods containing xylitol.

💙 A healthy diet, sensible treats and regular veterinary care can go a long way towards keeping our furry family members happy and healthy!

Meet miss Jonte

Jonte started with us this year as our superstar receptionist but has discovered a passion to pursue her Veterinary Nurse career. Our Jonte will be starting her Certificate III at the end of this month and we are so excited to see her blossom into the amazing Nurse we know she is going to be.

When Jonte isn’t in the clinic you can find her on the footy field or camping with her two fur babies Dudley and Cowboy

🐶🐱 Being at the Vet Clinic can be quite boring and overwhelming for some of our fur babies, so we try make their experience as positive and stress free as possible 🐶🐱

Enrichment is all about providing activities and experiences that help pets feel calm, comfortable and engaged. Depending on your pet, this might include:

✅ Tasty treats or lick mats (The precious Izzie is seen here demonstrating the lick mat)
✅ Food puzzles and enrichment toys
✅ Favourite toys or blankets from home
✅ Hiding places and cosy bedding
✅ Gentle handling and allowing pets time to explore at their own pace

Our goal is make every visit fear free, these simple interactions can reduce stress, create positive associations with the clinic to ensure minimal stress to the pet.

Meet Dr Melissa Sherwood

Dr Melissa is one of our Senior Veterinarians here at All Pets Vet Hospital.
Melissa is born and raised in Darwin however she graduated from Murdoch University in 1999, and has been with us for 26years 😱. She particularly enjoys creating a fear free environment for her patients and enjoys all aspects of Veterinary Medicine and Surgical practices.

On the weekend she enjoys equestrian events with her horse Danny and spending time with her family.

Meet Nurse Mel

Another one of our Qualified Vet Nurses Mel is also born and bred in Darwin. She has worked as a veterinary Nurse for at least 10 years, and has a special interest in nursing critical care patients.

At home Mel has her pride and joy, her cat name Blue.
When she is not nursing, Mel keeps herself busy by reading, crocheting, doing yoga, and making jewellery.

Meet Dr Jamaya

Jamaya is a Darwin local who travelled to complete her Bachelor of Veterinary Science at James Cook University. Dr Jamaya started her career as a large animal Vet in Mt Gambier SA.
She has a passion for all animals big and small, with a special interest in wildlife and medicine.

In her spare time she enjoys dancing the Salsa and spending time with her beautiful baby boy.
