π¦ FOUND A BABY BIRD? PLEASE LEAVE IT ALONE! πΏ
Did you know that finding a young bird on the ground doesn't always mean it needs rescuing? β€οΈ
During spring, you may come across fledgling birds hopping around on the ground, flapping their wings or sitting in shrubs. While they might look helpless, this is often a normal part of learning to fly!
π£ WHAT IS A FLEDGLING?
A fledgling is a young bird that has left the nest but is still learning to fly. It may have feathers, a short tail and clumsy movements. Its parents are usually nearby, watching and continuing to feed it.
π WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?
β
Keep your distance and watch from afar.
β
Keep dogs and cats away from the bird.
β
Leave the bird where it is if it is safe.
β
Give the parents time to return and care for their young.
β οΈ WHEN DOES A BIRD NEED HELP?
If the bird is injured, bleeding, unable to stand, has been caught by a cat, or is in immediate danger, contact a wildlife carer for advice. If it is safe to do so, move pets away and keep people at a distance while you seek help.
π« PLEASE DON'T:
β Take healthy fledglings home.
β Attempt to feed them or give them water.
β Assume a bird has been abandoned just because you cannot see its parents.
πΎ Remember: The best help is sometimes leaving wildlife alone!
If you're unsure whether a bird needs rescuing, contact a qualified wildlife carer BEFORE intervening.
