🌟 Hot Spots 🌟

In Springtime we usually see a resurgence of hot spots on dogs caused by seasonal allergies. 🔥

🔴 Canine hot spots are lesions that occur when dogs scratch, gnaw and/or lick at an itchy area on their bodies. These sores are red, wet and often warm to the touch (hence the name "hot spots").
Hot spots often become infected, and the resulting discomfort will cause the dog to do further damage to the area with continued scratching, gnawing and/or licking.
(We refer to this condition as acute pyoderma, acute moist pyotraumatic dermatitis (AMPD) or moist/wet eczema.)

🔴 Treatment usually involves clipping the affected area, irrigating the wound to clear out as much dirt and bacteria as we can, and applying a topical ointment to treat the bacterial infection.
Patients also go home with an elizabethan collar to stop them licking the wound.

🌟 Cats With Jobs 💼🌟

We all know cats take their responsibilities very seriously.

🐱 Chief nap officer
🐱 Head of household surveillance
🐱 Senior biscuit maker
🐱 Quality control inspector of every box that enters the house

But cats have had some actual jobs too! 😹

For centuries, cats have worked alongside humans as:
🐀 Mousers - keeping farms, homes and food stores free from rodents.

🚢 Ship's cats - travelling on ships to control rats and mice and becoming much-loved members of the crew.

🌾 Farm cats - protecting grain stores and livestock areas from unwanted visitors.

🏪 Shop cats - earning their keep in everything from general stores to bookshops.

And some cats have even become therapy cats, library cats and office cats, proving that apparently there really is no limit to a cat's career options.

Of course, most modern cats have moved into a much more demanding line of work...

🌟 Separation Anxiety: Preparing Your Pet for Holiday Boarding 🌟

Heading away for the school holidays? While some pets settle happily into boarding, others can find being away from home and their family stressful.

A little preparation can make the experience much easier.

🏠 Practise being apart
If your pet isn't used to being separated from you, start with short, manageable periods apart and gradually build up the time.

🛏️ Try a trial stay
If your boarding facility offers daycare or overnight trial stays, these can help your pet become familiar with the environment, staff and routine before your holiday.

🍽️ Keep their routine familiar
Give the boarding team details about your pet's usual meal times, exercise, sleep routine and favourite activities. The more familiar things feel, the easier the adjustment may be.

🧸 Pack something familiar
If allowed, send their usual bed, blanket or favourite toy. A familiar scent can be reassuring in an unfamiliar environment.

💛 Tell the boarding team everything
Let them know about any fears, previous boarding experiences, anxiety, medications, triggers or unusual behaviours. This helps them provide care tailored to your pet.

🐕 Choose the right type of care
Boarding isn't necessarily the best option for every pet. If your pet becomes very stressed in unfamiliar surroundings, an in-home pet sitter may be a better fit.

🩺 If your pet already struggles with separation, plan ahead.
Don't wait until the week before your holiday. Our veterinarians can help you work out strategies to reduce anxiety and, when appropriate, discuss behavioural support or medication.
And remember, never give your pet human medication or calming products without speaking to our vets first.

A calm, confident departure starts well before the suitcase comes out. 💕

🌟 Fun Fact Friday - Magpies Can Recognise Human Faces! 🌟

Think that magpie in your neighbourhood looks familiar? There’s a good chance you look familiar to them too! 👀
Australian magpies are remarkably clever birds and can recognise individual human faces. Researchers have found that they can remember more than 30 different people and they don't just recognise us by our clothes. They can learn to identify individual faces.
And their memories can be remarkably long-lasting.

Magpies are highly territorial and may live in the same area for many years. So the magpie you see on your morning walk (or the one who swooped you!) could actually be the same bird you've been passing for years. They can become familiar with the people who regularly share their territory too.

Even more lovely? Magpies don't only remember people they don't like. They can form positive relationships with humans too. Researchers have observed magpies recognising familiar people and even responding to their voices.
So next time a magpie watches you from the fence, remember... you might be part of their neighbourhood memory! 🖤🤍

🌟 Grass Seeds 🌟

Grass seeds are a common cause of admissions to hospital in Springtime. 🌾 They fall off long grass and embed themselves in a dog’s paws, ears, armpits, tail or skin, sometimes causing painful wounds and infections. It's important to remove them as quickly as possible as they can embed themselves under the skin and migrate through your pet's body. 🤕

Signs that your dog may have picked up a grass seed include:
🔹 head shaking
🔹 paw licking
🔹 swelling
🔹 redness
🔹 oozing or
🔹 sneezing if the grass seed has lodged in the nose.

If the grass seed is close to the surface of the skin our vets may be able to remove it with a special pair of tweezers, however if it has become embedded deeply beneath the skin or lodged in eyes, ears or mouth, surgical removal may be required.

The best thing to do is keep your dog away from long grass in the warmer months and check their fur and paws thoroughly after a walk. You should also ensure that your dog is kept well groomed, particularly around the ears and feet. 🐾
