A new member recently asked me why I decided to become a Box Divvy Hubster. The question took me straight back to my childhood — to the local markets in China, where fresh food, familiar faces and small acts of generosity were part of everyday life.
Growing up in China, going to the local market with my family was a regular part of life. One of the little signs that you were becoming an “adult” was when your mum handed you a couple of coins and sent you to buy some garlic by yourself. (Garlic is an essential ingredient in stir-fried vegetables,)and if you were lucky, the seller might even add a little extra. There were no plastic bags — we brought our own market baskets or net bags.
In many ways, Box Divvy reminds me of the life I grew up with: fresh food, personal connections, buying only what you need and a community that looks after one another.
When I first joined Box Divvy as a member, I remember thinking that I hadn’t tasted vegetables this fresh in a very long time.
But Box Divvy is about more than just fresh food. The world is changing rapidly, and so is the way we live. Yet change does not always mean that life has become happier or healthier.
Whether it’s paying farmers fairly, reducing food waste, Resmart, choosing family-owned businesses or selecting products without nasty ingredients, being part of Box Divvy makes me feel that I’m doing more than simply shopping. I’m contributing, in a small way, to something good for the world.
That is why I feel so grateful to be part of Box Divvy. I also have the opportunity to share these values with my children: the joy of fresh produce, the importance of living simply and eating in moderation, caring for the environment and supporting our community.
My next little project is to transform the garage into a cleaner, brighter and more welcoming pickup space.
If you happen to be passing through Belrose, please come by and say hello to this happy market stallholder.
I’m Jingjing.
