PUT THEM TO THE TEST 🐏

The latest results are through from the 2025-drop Balmoral Breeders Sire Evaluation, and Kurra-Wirra 230939 has performed right across the board.

Against 17 other sires, his progeny finished:

🥇 1st Fine Wool Index — 138
🥇 1st Wool Production Index — 144
🥇 1st Sustainable Merino Index — 122
🥇 1st Tops +25 and Cull -26
🥇 1st Clean Fleece Weight +21

But probably the result we’re most pleased with is what happened when they were classed.

25% more progeny classed into the TOPS and 26% fewer into the CULLS — the best result in the trial for both.

Back that up with +21% clean fleece weight, +10.8mm staple length and +7.8kg yearling weight, and it’s a pretty complete result.

For us, this is what sire evaluation is all about.

Put our genetics into an independent trial, run them alongside other leading Merino genetics and see how the progeny actually perform.

230939 did exactly that.

Good sheep, backed by the numbers.

Kurra-Wirra Glenelg Ram Sale Report 🐏

A solid result for Kurra-Wirra at the Glenelg Regional Ram Sale, with four rams sold to a top of $5,000 and averaging $3,875.

Lot 30 – 240135 sold for $4,000
Lot 31 – 240554 sold for $1,500
Lot 32 – 240686 sold for $5,000
Lot 33 – 240896 sold for $5,000

Lot 29 – 240497 attracted plenty of interest and was passed in at $6,500, just short of his $7,500 stud reserve. We were more than happy to bring him home and retain him within the Kurra-Wirra breeding program.

A big thank you to all buyers and underbidders for their support, and also to the Glenelg Regional Merino Field Day Sale Committee for allowing us to be a vendor in the sale. It’s great to be involved in a strong local event alongside other breeders.

Thanks again to everyone who stopped by for a look and a chat throughout the day.

LOT 29 | KW 240497

As a hogget, 240497 was one of 12 rams retained as a potential stud sire. We’ve decided to offer him through the Glenelg Regional Ram Sale, giving commercial producers and other studs a chance at some of our best genetics.

Lot 29 carries a $7,500 stud reserve — we’re not letting one of our best young sires go for less than he’s worth. If sold, he’ll go straight to the AI Centre, where we’ll collect and retain semen for future use in the Kurra-Wirra stud.

He’s by Anderson 200504, a proven sire with over 2,200 progeny on the ground and performance backed by multiple independent sire evaluations.

His dam, 190935 “Mrs Perfect,” is one of the most influential females we’ve bred — 31 lambs on the ground with more due this year through ET, 5 sons retained for stud use, and 6 daughters now in our ET program.

240497 combines elite wool and skin quality with good growth and balanced ASBVs. We think he could be the best wool and skin ram we’ve produced. If there was a ASBV for wool and skin he would be in the top 1%.

We’ll be backing that with retained semen used over 50-70 ewes in our fully genomic flock, with every progeny genomically tested — building linkage data that strengthens the accuracy of his breeding values for anyone using his genetics.

🐑 WINDOW SHOPPING RAMS AT SHEEPVENTION? ARE ALL PEN CARDS CREATED EQUAL? 👀

Not all pen cards tell the full story.

At Kurra-Wirra, we reckon if a trait is worth breeding for, it’s worth measuring and putting on the pen card.

✅ Condition Score (CS)
✅ Adult Clean Fleece Weight (ACFW)
✅ Worm Egg Count (WEC)
✅ Early Breech Wrinkle (EBWR)

…and plenty more.

As you’re walking around Sheepvention, have a look at the pen cards and ask yourself:

Is this stud actually measuring the traits that make a difference in a commercial flock?

If they aren’t measuring them, how do they know they’re making progress?

📍 Sheepvention – Site 392 (same spot as always)
📅 Sunday & Monday

We’ll have:
🐏 Stud sires on display.
🐑 A selection of potential 2026 sale rams.
🐑 The official launch of our new Kurra-Wirra White Suffolk Stud.

Whether you’re looking for your next sire or just stopping by for a chat, we’d love to see you.

KW Sheep. Built to Hold Condition.🐑💪

Condition score measures a sheep’s ability to maintain body condition.

Sheep that hold condition have better doing ability and greater resilience, particularly when feed gets tight or the season turns against them.

The practical benefits are clear:

✔️Better fertility
✔️More lambs conceived
✔️Improved lamb survival
✔️Higher weaning rates
✔️Better resilience
✔️Less feeding pressure
✔️Greater lifetime productivity

If you want sheep that do — KW is the place to go.

PROVEN. NOT PROMISED. 🐑

Anyone can say they’ve got good sheep.

Independent sire evaluation trials prove it.

At this year’s Balmoral Breeders Sire Evaluation Trial, Kurra-Wirra 230939 was named Standout Sire, with his progeny judged the best overall across both the Tops and Culls classes.

We’re really proud of these results because they reflect what we’ve been breeding towards for a long time—balanced sheep with exceptional wool quality, sound structure, natural fat cover and consistency right across the drop.

Selected sons of 230939 will be offered at our Measured to Perform On-Property Ram Sale on 2 November, giving clients the opportunity to access genetics that have been independently assessed and proven under commercial conditions.
