Holding nose 😷 If your dog passes wind frequently, can anything be done to help tame their tummy?

Dogs may pass more wind when they have a short- or long-term intestinal upset. 💨 Common triggers include dietary indiscretion (eating something they shouldn’t), food intolerances and infectious causes, such as viral, bacterial or protozoal gastroenteritis.

If your dog has persistent or excessive flatulence, abnormal stools, vomiting, poor appetite or weight loss, it’s best to have them assessed by our knowledgeable vets, who can get to the bottom of the issue! 🩺

If your pet is unwell with a poor appetite, vomiting and/or diarrhoea, how can we help keep them hydrated? 💧

Our experienced vets can assess your pet’s level of dehydration and administer appropriate fluid therapy, such as:
• Subcutaneous fluids: sterile fluids administered under the loose skin, where they are absorbed gradually over several hours. These may be suitable for mild dehydration in an otherwise stable pet.
• Intravenous (IV) fluids: fluids administered directly into a vein. These are generally used for moderate to severe dehydration, ongoing fluid losses or pets requiring closer monitoring, and usually require a hospital stay. 🏥

If you suspect your pet is unwell and becoming dehydrated, please contact our caring team promptly for advice. 🩺

Did you know that cats often have a low thirst drive? 🐱

Wild cats obtain much of their moisture from eating prey, and healthy feline kidneys can concentrate urine efficiently.

This means that domestic cats, especially those eating mainly dry food, may benefit from a little extra help staying hydrated. Have a chat with our friendly vets about kitty hydration options, including:
💧 feeding part of your cat’s diet as tinned or wet food
💧 providing a feline drinking fountain ⛲
💧 offering moist hydration aids, such as lickable treats, hydration supplements or pet-safe broths made without onion, garlic or excess salt

Bonnie’s lovely mum Alexandra sent us all a box of Portuguese tarts to say thank you to our team for taking such good care of her girl Bonnie before & after recovering from her surgery.

We’re always happy to care for our patients, but we certainly won’t say no to a Portagee tart!

Thank you so much Alexandra & Bonnie for the sweet surprise — and most importantly, we’re so happy to see Bonnie doing well!

“Can I cook my pet’s meals instead of feeding them a commercial diet?”

While we understand the desire to treat your pet to a little home-cooked love, 🍲 it can be difficult to ensure that a homemade diet provides the correct balance of macronutrients (proteins, fats and carbohydrates) and micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) required for long-term health. This is particularly important for growing puppies and kittens. 🐾

For this reason, we recommend either:
🍽️ providing most of your pet’s food through a high-quality, complete and balanced commercial diet, with small amounts of healthy home-cooked extras, or
🍽️ consulting our team about a referral to a veterinary nutritionist who can formulate a complete and balanced home-cooked recipe for your pet

Happy cooking! 👩‍🍳

With H5 bird flu detected in wildlife across several Australian states, you may be wondering whether your pets are at risk. 🐦

Bird flu mainly affects birds. Although the risk to cats and dogs remains low, close contact with infected wildlife, including eating an infected bird, may result in infection.

Keep cats indoors or in secure enclosures, and dogs on a lead around beaches, wetlands and other wildlife areas. Prevent pets from hunting, scavenging or approaching sick or dead wildlife. 🐾

Concerned about possible exposure? Contact our team for advice.

Did you know that adding an appropriate amount of plain, unflavoured psyllium husk may provide gastrointestinal health benefits for some dogs and cats? 🌾

Psyllium husk is a soluble fibre that adds bulk to stools, holds water in the gut, supports beneficial gut bacteria and helps keep gut contents moving.

For these reasons, it may help to: 💩
✅ reduce signs of large-bowel diarrhoea and inflammation (colitis)
✅ support regular bowel movements
✅ assist with normal a**l gland emptying during defecation

Have a chat with our team before adding psyllium to your pet’s diet, as the appropriate amount depends on their individual needs. 🩺

Yesterday, we had the heartbreaking honour of saying goodbye to a very special member of a family.

Today, we received the most thoughtful gesture from his family — beautiful flowers and chocolates as a thank you for caring for their beloved dog.

We know that no words can make saying goodbye any easier, but being trusted to care for a pet throughout their life, and to be there for them at the end, is something we never take for granted.

Thank you for allowing us to be part of your journey and for your incredibly kind gesture during such a difficult time.

Run free, beautiful boy. You will be deeply missed.

A huge thank you to our wonderful work experience student who spent the last week with us at Cronulla Vet.

She kindly dropped in beautiful box of chocolates along with a card filled with individual handwritten notes for each staff member. It was such a lovely and personal gesture, and we truly appreciated the time and thought she put into making everyone feel special.

We are so proud of everything she achieved during her work experience and wish her nothing but happiness, success and many exciting opportunities for the future.

If your dog drags or rubs their belly along the ground, itchy skin is the most likely culprit. The sparsely haired tummy is easily irritated by contact allergens, and plants like itchplant (Tradescantia) are a classic cause of red, itchy bellies in spring. 🌱

Insect bites, atopy, and skin infections can also be to blame. Check your garden for problem plants and rinse your dog's belly after walks in long grass. 🚿🐾

If the rubbing persists or the skin looks red, come see us.
