I received a call from this client. He was having difficulty finding a groomer who could handle his fear aggressive dog without making them more anxious about each groom. I was excited. This is what I do best!
The dog arrived and he was so stiff from fear, ready to defend himself from the scary groomer. We began muzzled as I slowly introduced him to the tools and showed him that I would be gentle and respectful as we go. I removed the matting from him legs and he began to trust me. I removed the muzzle for the bath and we began to bond a little, though he still jumped at every touch. He was now feeling comfortable enough to start sniffing around so I brought over anything I could for him to smell.
Many groomers would now use a high velocity dryer to dry him but I was sure this would lose the trust we'd built so I rolled out the stand dryer which is quiet, warm, and gentle - it's what I use on cats. He tolerated this well though he was a bit restless.
Now it was time for the final clip and I realised, he's mostly anxious about his nails being clipped and his front legs. He's no longer jumping at every touch and his muscles have relaxed. I think it's clear in the after photo just how comfortable he had become by the end of our session.
