Our facility in Craigieburn is home to our lifesaving animal shelter, where, to-date, we have rescued, rehabilitated, and ethically rehomed over 12,000 animals and assisted countless pet owners to keep their beloved pets during times of hardship via our Community Outreach Programs. Those who have ever formed a loving connection with a companion animal will know the strength of this precious and unique relationship and why it should be championed. We are dedicated to providing our community with accessible resources and support, high standards of care, and compassion in order to keep pets and their people together where they belong. Over the past decade, we have embarked on a journey to evaluate the needs of animals (and their owners) in our community, to identify barriers and find innovative ways to deal with the grass root problems that see companion animals being abandoned. We aim to strengthen the human-animal bond and confront animal abandonment at its root causes. Through innovative programs, accessible services, community education and public advocacy, we have become a community resource hub for pet owners and an unwavering champion for animals who need us most. Our focus is to keep community pets with the families that love them by offering preventative pet retention programs, which work to avoid pets from needing assistance in the first place.

Imagine having almost nothing left to give... and then the one thing that keeps you going needs your help. 💔

We’ll call her Marie.

Marie has lived through more than most people should ever have to.

She cares for her grandson and other family members living with serious medical issues. She has experienced family and domestic violence. And right now, she is facing severe financial hardshi, most weeks, she struggles just to put food on the table.

Through it all, there has been Princess.

Her dog.
Her companion.
Her comfort.
Her family.

So when Princess developed a severe and painful skin condition, it became one more thing for Marie to carry.

Princess needs ongoing veterinary treatment, medication and special food to manage her condition and relieve her pain.

And right now, Marie simply can't afford it.

That's where we come in.

Our SCAR Community Animal Hospital and shelter team are working alongside Marie to help Princess get the care she needs. We're doing what we can to make sure financial hardship doesn't mean Marie has to lose the one source of comfort that has stayed beside her through some of the hardest moments of her life.

But we can't do it alone.

Bella might be a Husky x Staffy… but apparently she has also applied for the position of Professional Lap Dog. 🥹

Bella is a gorgeous bundle of cleverness, cheekiness and enthusiasm, and she is looking for someone who wants a dog to do life with. ❤️

She loves getting out and about, exploring, learning and burning off some of that youthful energy. She is also an absolute dream to train... smart and so eager to learn!

But here’s the thing we really love about Bella…

Once she’s had her exercise, enrichment and a little adventure, she can switch gears beautifully.

She can curl up beside you.
She can relax.
And, apparently, she can happily curl herself into the lap of a shelter volunteer and look completely at home. 😂

What Bella really needs is someone who will enjoy her clever brain, give her opportunities to learn, keep her active and help her continue becoming the wonderful adult dog she is growing into.

She’s fun.
She’s affectionate.
She’s ridiculously cute.
She’s a little bit cheeky.
And she has so much love to give.

This is what the human-animal bond looks like. ❤️

Connection doesn’t always need words.

Sometimes it’s a patient hand, a gentle voice, a little kindness… and maybe a treat.

For Forest, this moment with SCAR volunteer John is about more than learning to shake. It’s about trust. It’s about choosing to engage with someone, feeling safe enough to reach out a paw, and experiencing the simple joy of being cared for.

The human-animal bond can be incredibly powerful. It can bring comfort, build confidence, reduce loneliness and remind both people and animals that they matter.

And sometimes, all of that can happen over one little treat. 🐾❤️

A public holiday is for slowing down, putting your feet up… and doing absolutely nothing. 😴🐾

Our foster cats have this whole relaxing thing figured out. No rushing. No schedules. Just a cosy chair, a safe place to rest, and plenty of time to simply be a cat. 🐱❤️

For some animals, this kind of peace is everything.

Five beloved pets. One family in crisis. And almost nowhere for them to go. 💙

Meet Winnie, Cosmo, Wednesday, Maze and Cookie.

When their family suddenly found themselves without a home in January, they faced the impossible task of finding somewhere safe for five pets.

A family member wanted to help, but taking in five animals simply wasn’t possible.

So they contacted SCAR.

Our Emergency Boarding Program was already incredibly full, but we knew we had to say yes.

Since January, Winnie, Cosmo, Wednesday, Maze and Cookie have been safely cared for while their family works tirelessly to find a home where they can all be reunited.

What was meant to be a few weeks has become months.

And through it all, their family has never stopped loving them. They regularly check in, asking about each of their beloved pets and making sure they’re okay.

These animals were never unwanted.
They were never abandoned.
They were simply caught in circumstances outside their family’s control.

Without programs like ours, this family would have lost all five of them forever.

But because of your support, they are still together. ❤️

Our Emergency Boarding program exist to keep people and their pets together through homelessness, family violence, hospitalisation and other crises.

Just a reminder that Second Chance Animal Rescue’s shelter will be closed this Friday for the AFL Grand Final Public Holiday.
