Separation issues can arise at any time in your dogs lifetime, whether they are 6 months or 6 years old, so it's important to practice separation from them on the regular to set them up for success! 🧡 🐾

Chill is a skill 😎

Being able to relax whilst the vacuum is running, people are moving around, the kids are playing or nothing particularly exciting is happening doesn't always come naturally to our dogs.

We have to teach it. Just like sit, stay, recall or lead walking, settling and switching off are skills that need to be practised.

What should you actually do whilst your dog is reacting?! 😰

Reactivity isn't something you can throw quick fixes at, it needs an individualised approach because every dog is different and is reactive for different reasons, so the answer isn't that simple until we understand whats going on.

It's not just about what you do whilst the dog is reacting, it's about all the underlying work you are doing in the background to give your dog the skills needed to be able to navigate their reactivity and set them up for success!

The biggest reward is freedom! 🧡🐾

Dogs should have access to off-lead spaces, beach time, bush walks and social time. They should have opportunities to run, sniff, explore and just be dogs.

BUT…

According to law they must be "under effective control" so, what’s important is making sure your dog has the skills to enjoy these freedoms safely and appropriately. Not just for them but for those around them.

Recall, engagement, impulse control & good manners are what allow us to give our dogs more freedom.

Because freedom isn’t just given, it’s earned through good manners, good choices and reliable skills 🧡

What should you do whilst your dog is reacting?! 👀

It’s a common question, but the truth is, we can’t give you a simple answer without first sitting down and deep diving into your individual dog and their situation.

Reactivity isn’t something we can just throw a quick fix at. Dogs can be reactive for lots of different reasons, and each case requires an individualised approach.

There are so many underlying skills that need to be built before we start expecting you & your dog to navigate environments around other dogs again. And what those skills are will depend on why your dog is reactive in the first place.

It might be basic obedience, impulse control, confidence building, relationship building or a mixture of all of these skills and more.

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach. We need to understand the dog before we can work on the reaction. 🧡 🐾
