⛈️ Storm Phobia in Pets 🐾

With storm season approaching many pets can become anxious or frightened by thunder, lightning, wind, rain, or even changes in air pressure. Some pets may pace, pant, shake, hide, vocalise, become clingy, or try to escape during storms.

If your pet struggles with storm anxiety, there are ways you can help:
🏠 Create a safe, quiet space indoors
🎶 Use calming music or white noise
🧸 Offer favourite toys or treats for distraction
💙 Stay calm and reassuring
🐶 Keep pets safely secured inside during storms

For pets with more severe anxiety, there are also medications, calming supplements, pheromone products, and behaviour strategies that can make storm season much less stressful.

If you’re concerned your pet may have storm phobia, chat with our team!
We’re here to help keep your furry family members feeling safe and comfortable. 🌧️🐕

🐶 Canine cough cases are on the rise 🐾

Canine cough (also known as kennel cough) is a highly contagious respiratory illness commonly spread in areas with high dog traffic such as parks, day care and boarding facilities.

Symptoms can include:
• A persistent dry or honking cough
• Retching or gagging
• Sneezing or nasal discharge
• Watery eyes
• Lethargy
• Reduced appetite
• Fever in more severe cases

Just like the human flu vaccine, the canine cough vaccination doesn’t cover every single strain. What it does do is help reduce the severity of symptoms and lower the risk of serious illness.

If your dog is coughing or showing signs of illness, please be a responsible pet owner and keep them home to help reduce the spread to other dogs 💙

If you’re concerned about your pet or their vaccinations status, please give us a call 🐾

Why remove a lump thats “not cancerous”? 🐾

Bilbo recently had surgery to remove a lipoma from his neck. While lipomas are typically benign (non-cancerous) fatty masses, their location can sometimes make them problematic. Due to this lump sitting close to important structures like the jugular vein, airway, and oesophagus, Bilbo’s very diligent dad chose to have it removed sooner rather than later.

Not all lipomas behave the same way either. A “simple” lipoma is usually soft, slow-growing, and well-contained. However, infiltrative lipomas can extend deeper into surrounding tissues and muscle, making them more invasive and much harder to remove if left to grow.

Even benign lumps can:
• Continue growing over time
• Cause discomfort or reduced mobility
• Interfere with breathing, eating, or normal movement depending on location
• Become more difficult and risky to remove later on

Given the delicate location of Bilbo’s lump, surgery required careful planning and precision. A huge shoutout to Dr Jessie for her meticulous approach operating in such a high-risk area.

Early intervention can often mean a simpler surgery and smoother recovery, and on that note - we’re very happy to report Bilbo has recovered beautifully! 💙

A glimpse into Dukes day at Millpoint Vet.
Duke visited us recently for a dental scale and polish, along with a full set of dental X-rays 🦷✨

His morning began with a little pre-med to provide pain relief and relax him into his visit, his diligent mum opted for pre-anaesthetic blood tests to ensure it was safe to proceed and we are pleased to report his bloods were perfect!
Duke had an IV catheter placed to provide IV fluids during his procedure and he was carefully monitored throughout his anaesthetic by nurse Gemma.

Duke had a beautiful calm recovery with plenty of post-op snuggles and once he was feeling brighter, he had some slow cooked prime100 for afternoon tea and a relaxed stroll outside to enjoy the sunshine.

A smooth procedure with lots of care, comfort, and love along the way. Rest assured, your babies are treated like our own.💙

Did you know it’s almost been a year since Millpoint Vet came under new ownership? 🐾

Over the past 12 months, you may have noticed a few changes around the clinic…
The store room is now our beautiful dog consult and we have even opened up the garden area, we welcomed more team members, expanded our services with in-house lab equipment, brought in a range of natural pet treats, official stockists of LickiMats, plus puppy school run by qualified IMDT trainers… just to name a few.

Behind the scenes, it’s been a journey.
The Prime100 fridge has had more address changes than most people, chairs have been on a daily relocation program, and the clinic has slowly been claimed by salt lamps and plants 🌿

We’re also busier than ever, and so incredibly grateful to care for so many beautiful pets and their lovely humans. It’s been a big (and slightly chaotic) year of growth, and we’re so thankful to have you along for the ride.

Now we’d love to hear from you!
What have you loved? What could we do better? Anything you’d love to see next?💙💙
